Reinstall Trainz+

My Trainz+ is very much messed up. I would like to delete all my Trainz and reinstall. Can someone tell me the best way to do this. I'll be cleaning up my computer at the same time. I have found all the different versions of Trainz that I have downloaded in My Trainz page. Do the different versions build upon each other or are they completely seperate?

I am thinking they should have separate data folders, as newer versions will have assets that are not compatible with the older versions. It works great to have older assets in newer versions, but not the other way around.

I would like to delete all my Trainz and reinstall.

To reinstall Trainz Plus I would go to the MyTrainz link above then select, under the sub heading "Product Downloads", the link to Download Trainz Plus.

I would then choose the relevant installer (Windows or Mac, Full or Online). My preference would be the Full Installer which I would save on a backup drive so that I would not have to spend the time and online ISP charges downloading it again should I ever need to reinstall it again. You will need to run all the SP and build number updates that have appeared since that installer was made available.

The only significant issue could be the fate of your current Trainz Plus User Data Folder. A reinstall will create a new randomly named User Data Folder but, unless you have deleted it in a cleanup, the original will still be present. If it is present then you can simply redirect Trainz to the old folder via the Trainz Settings Install tab. The new folder could be retained as it would be an ideal test bed for testing routes and sessions to check if they are free of DLC (e.g. "Packaged") and third party assets that will create problems for others if you upload the route to the DLS.

My thoughts.

pware thanks for the help. Nice to hear from you again. I still have 'TrainzPlus-Offline-Installer-126280.zip' Would this work?

Good to see that you are still "steaming ahead" at full throttle.

It certainly should and it is the latest Trainz Plus Windows build so no updates or patches will be immediately required.

Everything loaded ok. Now I just have to download routes, sessions, and items that I really will use. So all is well in Trainz+ RR land!

I'm thinking of reinstalling Trainz+ to see if it clears HD editing problems that appeared after a recent update.

If I follow the reinstall advice listed above, I gather that my route creations will no longer appear in game.

What is the best way to save my existing content and bring it into the clean install?

Thanks in advance.

A new install will only contain the assets that are built into the installation files. IF you have not deleted your original user data folder (and this folder is not the same as the program folder that contains the Trainz executables) then all your original DLS, DLC and third party downloads plus anything you have created yourself will still be present on your system in the original user data folder.

The new install of Trainz+ will only look in its newly created user data folder for all your content so you have to redirect it to look in and use your original user data folder.

To do this you will need to identify the location (drive and folder path) of your original user data folder before you start the install. It is usually in the folder named ...
C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\trs22\build xxxxxxxx but you could have moved it to another drive and/or folder path.

Notes:
  1. The folder trs22 is one of the parent folders because Train Plus will always report itself as being the latest retail version (TRS22).
  2. The xxxxxxxx will be a random sequence of letters and numbers. You may have several of these. If so then you will need to identify which one is the current user data folder - most likely the one with the latest modification date.
Record the full path name of this folder and, after the new install, paste it into the User Data Folder setting in the Trainz Setting - Install tab.

If the above instructions are not clear, a more detailed set of instructions can be found on the Trainz Wiki at How_to_Move_Your_User_Data_Folder
