Re-install problem

After reading some tips in the forum I decided to do a defrag and discovered that my Classics installation was in 1,467 fragments! No wonder it ran like a slideshow. Because the drive is quite full I decided that rather than defrag the disk with the program in place I would remove it, then defrag and reinstall it on a newly defragged second drive with loads of space so that I knew I would be getting a completely contiguous installation.

I've done that but now when I try to run Classics I get an error message that says my CD code is invalid or the installation is faulty and to reinstall. Although no error messages came up in the original install, I did a re-install and still get the same results. I've checked on the website and all of my cd codes are correctly registered.

In the second re-install I installed Classics 1 & 2 first, then re-booted and ran the program with no problems, rebooted again, and installed Classics Vol 3 and again re-booted, but I still get the error message. My CD codes are correct and there were no errors during re-installation.

I couldn't see the point in re-installing the service pack at this stage until the program is running properly.

Where do I go from here?

This is probably a bit obvious but did you disable your anti-virus etc during the installation process? Very easy to forget!

Cheers
Russell.

Yep, AV disabled for each re-install, but now I have more problems. I also removed 2009 and reinstalled it on the new drive. It will load, but locks up as soon as a route is selected from the menu. It was working perfectly before I embarked on this path of self destruction! Now all that works is 2006 which is still on the old drive, but its been there long enough not to suffer from fragmentation.

After stuffing around for most of the day, I've re-installed everything on my cluttered C: drive and they all work OK. Must have something to do with them being previously registered on that drive or something. If anyone knows a way around this I'd like to be know because there are a three large files on my C: drive that can't be defragmented. They live in the System Volume Information folder and they're something to do with restoring. They're all around 800-900mb. If I could get rid of these I'd have a chance of loading Trainz with a contiguous install, otherwise I'd like to know how to install everything on the other drive.

Question - do you need Classics to run 2009 or is it fully stand-alone?

mmm you might want to do a clean up, open up windows explorer, and select
your harddrive that has trainz on a select properties and hit the clean up button,, sounds like you have a few restoring points on you computer, thsi might work not sure

Firstly, did you install each of the programs in a separate folder? This is absolutely essential.

Secondly, when removing TRS, did you do a full uninstall using the uninstall utility, or did you just delete the folder? The latter will cause your problems for sure.

Finally, did you run a program like CCleaner to clean out the registry. Trainz does leave a bit of junk behind and this could be the issue.

If you failed to do any of the above, please do all of them now. It should resolve the problem.
