RAM question

Hello. My mom just gave me an old computer from 2003. I was planning to use it on my model railroad, but then I noticed the RAM. 2x 256MB DDR PC2700 CL2.5 from Samsung. Could I put this into my current computer? how much more RAM would I get with 2 256MB Cards and what is a cheap substitute to replace them with in the old computer.

Another Question, the origonal hard drive in the other computer is shot, what is a cheap substitute for that? I only need enough space for Digitrax's computer software and a Signaling system

13 Years old?
2 x 256 = 512?
Windows has a built in calculator.

It's probably not worth your energy to use the RAM from the old PC in your (assumption) newer one, given the fact that you are asking how much it's going to cost to replace said RAM if you remove it. What's the point?

Just buy new RAM for the newer PC, and let 5 year old dogs lie......

Well I just found out from a close friend over at simairline that the DDR RAM from the old Computer won't fit in the new one which is DDR2.

That's just as well. It may very well be less expensive to locate some used RAM for the old PC (if it will take more).

And in the same note, most computer repair shops carry used hard drives that people simply dispose of when they update, a 30 gig or less can be purchased dirt cheap, and usually come with a 90 warrantee.
This might get it up and running for little cost to be used as a 2nd comp.
I agree with Ed, I would not invest very much on a 4 yr old computer.

HTH in your decision(s) ---DLR

PS- check with freinds that miight be upgrading ?
