Product Problem

your last post ; tour product filters.
It's a hard life, read it, read it, dittto.
Even did a search, lost myself.
Then I realised it was your filters.

Sorry for that. I'm trying to decide if I should just throw Trainz in the bin, I've tried everything I know ( which is not much ) plus great ideas from you and others, I've deleted in segments every item of non built in content and still the problem is with me.
I feel I cannot really play the game if I can't use the various products available and after 3 years of asset building I don't want to start all over again from scratch, so Auran losses another FCT payer, as I said earlier I'm suprised no one from Auran as added to this thread, I take it they read things put on their forum ?
Cheers

Pj,
You have run trainz with the basic built in content. It ran OK.
Now you have CDP's of all your downloaded content. 1 by 1 add them then start trainz. One of them has to have the faults in it.
Anything thats come from the DLS should be ok. It's in the non DLS content somewhere.

Did you do CDP's of your non DLS routes as you mentioned.
PM coming your way.

PJ,
I've had the same fault and the bad news is that I couldn't find the solution.
I had about 80 gig of local files and went through all the same things you have.

The good news is that you can get around the problem. In the end, I created archive files in logical blocks (some from a specific asset creator, others of a particular gauge or prototype) for the really important stuff I absolutely needed off my old installation and did a fresh install on my new PC and then transferred the archive files one-by-one to the new machine/install. Yes, it's been a bit painful but I checked after I added each archive to ensure the problem had not re-appeared (if it had, I'd have repeated the process and left out the archive that caused the problem). So far, it been working fine but I'm still cautious and check for the fault after I load any new items.

Never give up, never surrender!

Interesting you could not find the fault either. I'm not good with computers. So if I save my best layouts for example in a cdp file then reinstall trainz if I then load up that cdp will it bring all the assets, locos wagons etc into the now bare bones of trainz ?
Cheers

Place all you want in surveyor, save as. into CMP locate route, save as CDP.
Save each layout in separate CDP's to keep the CDP size down.
The time you've spent in content manager these past days you'll be a dab hand at it by now.

Been following this thread for a while, though I have no answers either. However, I do want to commend you guys for putting patience and effort in helping dzien50 solve the problem he's encountered. True Trainzers! :)

Ive had this problem before.
It turned out to be four trucks in the local file that was to blame, after I deleted them, all went well.

the four trucks in question had the letters S R on the side of them.

The only way I could find them was to split the local file into sections and install them a bit at a time.
if the product screen came up full I would put them in a foulder marked local_good, If the product screen came up blank, I would split those files into smaller groups and try again, deleteing the assets.tdx and backup file each time.

I put these files to one side somewhere on my computer, if I can find them I will post them to you here, but I think I may have re-formated the partshion, since then.

But I hope this helps!

Jonathan

Hi all
Yes the community is great at helping.
I am no further forward if you read back you will see I've deleted everything with missing dependencies and its not worked.
I've reinstalled but my saved items in CDP do not load onto the the new install ? I thought I'd followed Dreadnought's advice but its not worked for me, all I got was the layout with no stock on it so I've gone wrong somewhere.

I don't understand why if I've deleted all downloaded stuff from a week before this problem started its still with me ?

My logic tells me if, say, Wagon A is faulty and causing problems then by deleting it the problem should go but that does not seem to be the case here.

So I'm still looking for help
Cheers

Did you archive your downloads via CMP? There's an option within the archiving function that allows you to archive all dependencies of an asset - make sure that's ticked!
As mentioned, it's best to do it in blocks and check after you loaded each one? That way you may be able to at least isolate the problem.
If you try to do the lot at once, it won't work.

Even better, don't move your latest stuff first. Whatever was loaded just before or around the time the problem first occurred is possibly suspect.

Hi
No I just saved it to CDP. I'm out of my depth with computers so could you give me a start to finish idiots walk through on what to do ?

All items downloaded up to a week before problem started have been deleted.

Hi PJ,
In CMP r/click on an item then you get options edit etc. Higher up is an archive option. Select that, a screen with your item appears with a box next to it, tick box and the item plus all its dependancies will be archived.

Righto, a few suggestions to start...
- Take your time and be patient
- If you don't completely understand what people are suggesting, don't do what you think they mean - ask first or you'll just get frustrated.

OK.
1 - Start up CMP
2 - Decide on a logical group of assets - search for all BR assets or all by "Tafweb" or all buildings or all layouts or whatever...and use the filters to ensure you're only getting the local & non-built-in ones.
3 - As you select them, drop them into the "Archiver" box on the left of the CMP screen. Remember, keep to your decided upon block of assets, don't overdo it.
4 - Once you have a good bunch of assets, hit the "archive" icon. Once it goes through the list, it'll ask you if you want to automatically add the dependencies - say "Yes" then select an appropriate name for the file - use the company/creator/category so you don't forget which is which.
5 - Continue this until you've got all the essentials. I had about 20-25 separate archive files.
6 - Kill off Trainz and all your local files - if you want, you can keep a copy of the local files somewhere else (an external drive or the like) but remember that somewhere in that local assets folder is whatever it is that's causing the problem.
7 - Load a completely fresh version of Trainz, patch it and make sure it's running OK - check the products all work OK.
8 - Start up CMP and Windows Explorer. Locate the archive files in Explorer and drag and drop them one at a time into the Archiver box in CMP and let CMP load them up for you. Remember, only one at a time and check Trainz for product function after each one. If it works, all good. If it fails after you loaded a particular archive, make a note of which one archive it was (and don't load that one again!) and repeat this from point 6 onward until it works.

It may not be pretty but this is how I got up and running again...

Good Luck!

Thanks, yes I do have some questions before I start.

1 when you say don't over do it, can you give me an approx, can you put 1000s of items in one file ?
2 load and patch it ? do you mean SP1 ? if so its already included in my version
3 windows explorer, you mean the internet ? if so why ?
4once i drag files to archiver do they load auto or must I do something.?

Sorry if these questions are silly
Cheers
PJ

sorry 1 more
If I click on " installed " this will give me every item I have, yes ? can just use this list to go though, keeping a note of where I'm up to each time
PJ

I've just done a little test
I selected every item from "AA " to "AB" Clicked archive and after a while a box opened showing me the list I clicked accept, then got a box say some are built in and cannot be archived I clicked close. I then got a Green coloured file on my desktop
Is all this correct so far ?
If so I will keep going to the list is completed
PJ

Following this Peter, am going to use this myself for the future.
Dreadnaught will correct I'm sure if wrong,
Built in items will not archive.
Logical archives. Say BR wagons for 1, BR coaches for 2, Br steam loco 3, Br diesel 4. Or all BR rolling stock.
Load and patch, you've got SP1 on your disc, sorted.
Windows explorer, found under start, all programs, accesories.
Once you drop files into archiver, yes they autoload.

Answer to question 3: no, Windows Explorer is not Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer is (usually) found here:

Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer

It's very handy to use for sifting through the folders and files on your harddisk(s). :)

Edit: Bah, fran1 beat me to it! :hehe:

Thanks Fran and Tiger
Its a long process and I'll end up with about 50/60 files, but if it works ( time is not a factor ) then great I will try and get it all done over the weekend and of course let you know the outcome.
When/if I find the culprit asset I wiil torture it until it confesses and award it " Pain in the A* first class " !!!!
Cheers

I'll try to cover the unanswered questions:
Thanks also should go to Tiger313 & fran1 - what they've said is spot on.

Numbers: The smaller the number of primary items you group together, the less you have to check through if an archive does fail. Apart from the layouts (which tended to be large because of the dependencies), I usually had only 200-500 per archive and that still meant I had archive files up to 500-700 meg but most were around 100-200 meg.

Patching: Most of us are still running versions that require separate patching when re-installing so I included the mention of the patch to ensure every 'i' was dotted and 't' crossed as I don't know which version of Trainz you've got... If you don't need the patch, you don't need the patch.

Filters: As per the original instructions, use the filters to ensure you don't get the built-in assets or those assets on the download station (I can't say I've ever tried to archive a non-local asset but I'd suggest it would fail...). If you're unsure of how the filters work, play around with the search function to get the hang of it - you can do that without changing or damaging anything. The search function is powerful and you can use multiple filters (use the plus and/or minus key on the right of the search box). It also allows you to reverse select if you use the "not equals sign" on the left. Don't forget you can also look at any asset's dependencies and then call them up on the main screen. Just kick it around until you're comfortable with it - best way to learn.

Selection: In regard to how you set up your archives, I've given this some additional thought. I tended to use groups of one or two similar categories or of a single prototype/gauge or from a single creator. This meant that if an archive failed, I could at least say the item in question had some simple defining characteristic and this might make it easier to isolate. By archiving alphabetically, you run the risk of having assets of 21 different categories, 95 different creators, etc all in the same archive... It becomes a lot harder to define the problem if you do find it. Do consider this when archiving.

Dreadnought1
