Polite request regarding large screenshots in threads not in the Screenshots forum(s)

Hi Trainzers,

I would like to politely request that any threads with screenshots that are over 800 x 600 be placed in the Screenshots forum (or the equivalent in the foreign language forums) or reduced to 800 x 600.

The reason for this is that due to an account problem that N3V are currently trying to sort out for me, I am unable to view threads with images that are larger than 800 x 600 when logged in. This prevents me from helping those who may need my help, especially in the Maintenance of Way forums, as I cannot access the thread.

In addition to this, the Code of Conduct does state a maximum size of 800 x 600 for screenshots that are not in the appropriate screenshot forum.

People may ignore this if they wish to, but it would help both me, and those who are on dial-up connections (there are still a few about).

I also ask that if one wishes to comment on this, keep it civil and constructive please.

Shane,

I think I should just clarify that the code of conduct does not, at least as far as I can, see actually put any size restriction on screenshots:

(Code of Conduct condition 18.1)

Screen shots posted to the Trainz Community Discussion Forums should be in .jpg format and should not exceed a reasonable pixel size and file size. Any screen shots that are considered excessively large by the moderation team will be modified to links or removed from the post altogether. It is recommended that heavy images are posted to the screenshots forum.

I do fully agree with you that any images, especially those posted outside the Screenshots forum should be kept to (about) the smallest size necessary to do the job for which they are intended. Download issues aside, it will help the person posting the images to keep their online storage space usage within their file/picture hosting services free allowance.

Cheers

Chris

You are correct. Absolutely.

Some smaller size screen shotz take an incredible time to download because of the size of the file.

Rather than a pixel limit I'd favour a file size limit.

trainsim.com used to have 100k max for hosted files and 150k max for outside (imageshack photobucket etc), don't know what happened to that but I'm seeing too many 4 meg images these days. One thread took 20 minutes to load a single page on my DSL.

Couple comparisons, uncompressed PNG at 800x600 750 kilobytes;

http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?312863-Image-size-800x600-uncompressed-png

Same image at 1024x768 50% compressed JPG 75 kilobytes;

http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?312865-Image-size-1024x768-50-compressed-jpg

I don't see any loss in quality with 50% compression, since the image is larger but the file size is 1/10th of the 800x600 I don't understand why everyone doesn't use compressed JPG files.

I seems the sig banner size have not changed - which is amazing casue some of the ones popping up of late are way over size but mods seem to be helpless in doing anything about them.

Thankyou for the responses. I agree regarding the file sizes - some images do have too large a file size and need to be compressed.

In this day and age where monitors of 1920x1080 pixel resolution are not uncommon, 800x600 seems a little restricting. I agree that all shots should be in *.jpg format.

Files of 200kb - 250kb seem to be about the norm for jpegs of 1400x788 pixels - is that too big?

Rob.

That seems about right if it's an uncompressed JPG or one with only 10%.

Perhaps 1024 x 768 would probably be better, but anything above this is a problem for dial-up users and those with smaller screens.

My question was meant to be rhetorical. 1024x768? a lot of us have moved on from the old 'square picture' days!

Most have, but there are still some about with that size screen. Don't forget the few dial-up users that are still about, as well as those using slow mobile broadband connections, where data use can be costly.

Good Morning All
We have removed the resolution restriction on screenshots in all forum sections, since most web browsers will now automatically adjust the visible 'size' of the image to fit the page. We do ask that people refrain from going overboard on resolution and size. However, a full size screenshot from within Trainz is now permissible to post. OTOH, we would hope that people posting images outside of the screenshots forum keep them to a reasonable file size, via compression... However, it's now permissible for a freeware, or payware, creator to provide high resolution screenshots of their work in their release threads :)

In regards to signatures, we will be reviewing this situation this year. Not sure when this will happen though.

Regards
