Patching Failed: TS2010

Hi Everyone ... I have now fixed my problem by un-installing TS2010 and re-installing the program and then applying the patch from the Desktop ... the whole process took many hours and the patch took over 1 - 2 hrs ... only problem is it has changed my personally designed layouts ... which I was expecting as I have had similar happen with other versions of Trainz.

I would like to also mention here that I agree with others about the questionable stability of this program and why should we be doing this ?
I bought this software because of my love for Trains and a passion for designing and building landscapes etc ... not for being subjected to something that seems to run/function on trial and era and the continuing need to understand the complexities of programing, programing language, compatible software, or surmising what may be compatibility and just what one should/could/would or maybe can do ... but none of this actually relates to Railways ... now I may be having a bit of a bitch here ... but this isn't what I originally bought the game for ... isn't it suppose to be for building Railways and all things related to Railways and having fun while doing this?

It's like any computer program - most computer programs require updates some time (even MSTS probably does)

Its good though that your problem is fixed.

MSTS had only ONE update before Microsoft abandoned it.

There are simply so many good routes out there for one to explore and enjoy, especially as OpenRails continues it improvement by volunteers, and the graphics gets better and better.

Not that MSTS is without it's troubles and deficiencies, but the dedication I see in others to improve this simulator is amazing to me.

In the meantime, Auran, get busy and give us a simulator that is more in real life, including seeing moving points and rail frogs, with guard rails even, and to see actual flanges on train wheels, let alone distant terrain and mountains!

When Auran finally does that, I will be impressed, indeed! :)

same thing happend to me could not install patch it got stuck half way i had to do task manager to cancel it now i cant start it from my desktop i double click it and a little window sits on the bottom but nothing opens ,,what happent to the good old way of putting a disk in and just playing the bloody thing ,,so far -10 out of ten for ts2010

Unfortunately you've killed the whole program, which now will require a reinstall. The patch was actually doing something in the background while it appeared frozen.

MMMM so how long does it take to install a patch 10 mins 3 hours

The patch can take a few hours, depending upon how much content you have.

When patching Trainz, I do this overnight while I sleep so the program can do its thing without me needing to do other things with the computer at the same time.

When done run an Extended Database Repair a few times to clean up the faults that may show up in your content.

After all this is done, you should be fine.

Downloaded patch for build 41615 to bring it up to build 43434 as my 2010 main page told me my installation was out of date. Fair enough............ clicking on the patch bombs me out back to the desktop, I get no opportunity to add the patch to my 2010 installation. This happens whether or not I have 2010 started.

Am I doing something wrong or not doing something right?

Thanks in anticipation.

Not stuck

It doesn't get stuck halfway, it just seems to. If you check the tower case activity light you will see the install is still running.
My install from the Desktop took 3.5 hours, so go way and leave the patch to do what it needs to do.

3.5 hours to do a patch job on TS 2010???????

And the year 2010 is not even finished yet...

Until Auran gets their simulator stable and working with minimal upgrades (which should be rare) I will stick with the good ole' MSTS with all her faults and quirks...

The reason it takes so long for some patches is because people install their content before patching. It is best to install any Trainz patches before you download/install any content.

Also, turning your antivirus software off speeds up the process.

someone told me to take the patch out of the original folder and put it on the desktop i did that installed the patch and after installing it it whiped ts2010 of my hard drive ..????????? so wich is the right way

That should not happen, unless you happen to have moved the Trainz folder elsewhere, or installed the wrong patch.

You will need to re-install TS2010, then use the autopatcher to update it to SP3 (best to do this before you install any content)

Make sure you are running as admin if you use Vista/7. ALso, check what folder it is patching - it should be patching the main Trainz folder (right-click the Trainz shortcut on the desktop and click Properties to find out where this is)

I told you in the other thread what you need to do;

http://www.dummies.com/store/product...470497432.html

"we just want to put disk in and play not do a full course of computer programming"

You don't need a full course of computer programming, all you need is to learn basic computer operation. Anyone who does not want to learn the basics needs to get Nintendo or Playstation, there you CAN just "put disk in and play".

I'm not defending the programmers here, they DID screw up a couple things - there should be some type of message saying that it's working on the database so it doesn't LOOK like it's hung up (since I know basic computer operation, I did CTRL ALT DELETE to bring up the Task Manager which showed that the patch program was still running, so I left it alone), and it SHOULD revert back to the previous version if the patch is interrupted and fails - giving the end user one shot at it then refusing to attempt to patch a second time is sloppy programming.

Knowing that they DID do that, and the only cure is to completely uninstall and resinstall the entire program if the patch fails, what people should do is;

1. Copy the entire Auran folder to a backup. If the patch fails you can then restore the prepatch files by deleting the Auran folder and copying the backup in to replace it.

2. Computer maintenance. Run the disk cleanup utility, run the disk defragmentation utility, make sure you have enough unused space on your hard drive, empty the recycle bin. 90% of newby problems are due to not doing periodic basic maintenance on their computer.

3. Run a virus scan with your regular antivirus, download Spybot and MalwareBytes and run both of those to make sure you got ALL the adware and spyware off your system.

4. Disconnect from the internet, shut off anti virus, firewall, screen savers, power schemes, automatic updates, google shopping alerts and whatever fancy dancing singing icon programs you have running, give all the system resources to the patch.

5. If you have six zillion broken faulty missing dependencies assets installed, fix them or get rid of them.

6. Run the patch, shut the monitor off, go to bed. Leave it alone until the next morning if needed, don't interrupt it.

Strange that, on TS2009 it does actually say when it is updating the Trainz Asset Database (it appears within the patch details). I wonder why it does not seem to appear in TS2010?

Latest patch worked :)

I will admit I was having alot of trouble with my patches every time I tryed they would fail so upon investigation and alot of forum reading I found my HDD was quite full only had around 6-7 gig spare so purchased a secondary 1TB HDD installed game on that then patched from desktop and all went perfectly :)
