Featherston to Masterton Part 2

Our train (1602) is seen crossing the Waingawa River

Solway's shelter was preserved in the upgrading works of 2007. Dating from 1880, could it be the 2nd oldest station building on the network???

The stop at Renall St. Not much of a view to be had here, as we're deep in Masterton's industrial area

The final gallop!

After terminating, the loco is detached and run around the SW cars in order to be turned for the return journey

Going for a spin

All ready to return to the capital

I've enjoyed the shots from everybody lately. Keep up the good work. I just can't see mrrangi's pics though.

Well i may have thrown some crappy textures on one but these are Caleb's DSGs - his first loco in trainz too iirc.

As for my DSGs, well...

Excellent work as usual Ryan,

I had the pleasure recently of driving a night work train with an F loco.

The work train passes through a dark Kenepuru Station.

The workmen get to work as an EW passes through with a freight train. (OSH didn't see anything! :hehe: )

Later that night/early that morning I had to pull the train off the mainline to allow the morning commuter trains through.

The little F and it's train sit in the yard and watch the EMUs rush in and out.

The F's cab is a great place to watch the trains come and go. The firebox keeps everything warm and dry on a brisk Wellington morning.

Just thought I would post to say hi to all our NZR content creators and route builders. Gotta say I'm really impressed by the stuff in this thread.

Sorry I dont have any screenshots worth posting just yet.

I have just found my way back into Trainz after a lengthy absence.

Now running TS12 so at this stage I'm working through the process of fixing the various bits of content that I made for TRS2004 quite a while back.

I'll be updating them to be fully compliant with TS12, but then if possible I will try to ensure they work under 2009 as well and re-upload them with the older version tag to keep them as accessible as possible.

Has anyone tried the NZR locos in TS12 yet.
Do they work OK?

So far I have only tested my own creations (which were all made for TRS2004) none of them worked as is. But the problems so far haven't been too bad to resolve. Syntax/format errors in the config files were all pretty easy to fix, in some cases I had to move files around from the original directory structure so it could find things, create thumbnails for assets that never had them, etc.

Worst problem so far was with assets where I had originally built them with .pm meshes. Fortunately as I still have all my original gmax files I was able to simply re-export them as .im meshes.

If anyone has any specific pieces of NZR content they would like tested in TS12 just let me know and I will see what I can do. Depending upon the complexity of any problems I may be able to help you with fixing them too, have learnt a bit in the last few days regarding how to fix stuff.

I use qiute a bit of your stuff in 2009 and 2010. Some I have updated for my own use but it will be good to have updated items availabe on the DLS so others interested in NZR stuff can have access to them.

Here's a few shots of activities from the last few days.

Train 1605 gets underway from Maymorn with the sun starting to show over the Rimutaka Range

A couple of days later, and while driving a down NIMT freight through Tawa 2 tunnel, the train parted! That's never happened to me before. Pretty bad location for it to happen too. We see 1200+1267+7226+5166 where they came to rest with 7 wagons still attached, after getting a decent shunt from the other parts of the train as they hit us.

The second split. Basically, the one train ended up as 5 trains. Obviously poor train handling, as I'm sure the game doesn't have random events like this programmed to happen. Interesting.

Yesterday around the Capital

Morning all

We see DM297 + partner cruising into Wellington after a trip up the hill & back. Rumour has it that these units could be taken off the Jville line within a month!

Next, it was off to Melling with a 2 car Ganz

After these short runs, it was time to wander over to platform 9 for the afternoon 7 car Masterton service. Seen here climbing towards 'the Hole'.

La wagon

I am presently creating this La wagon for TRS2010. I have it cofigured to load/unload timberstacks, but would like to configure for loose substances, e.g. coal, gravel, firewood, scrap steel, etc. I recall seeing these La wagons loaded with such during my younger years and imagined they were loaded at source with a clamshell bucket or a frontend loader. Now a question, I am really curious. Does anyone know how they were unloaded at the destination? As far as I know, we don't have tippers and if the side doors were opened, this could spell disaster. Answers welcome. Thanks.

In the 'good old days' you simply dropped the door and the contents came pouring out ... stand back for a minute or so, then start shovelling. Manual labour aplenty in those days.

At a coal depot, for example, a string of wagons would be left for the distributing merchant to unload over a number of days and collected when empty. The merchant would be charged 'ullage' over and above the cost of the product and its delivery for each wagon for each day it remained in the depot and not available for collection - encouraged you to get on with the job and unload them.

In some countries (UK, for example) a coal or stone merchant might own or lease a number of wagons and then ullage would not apply - the wagons might then actually remain loaded at the distribution depot and act as storage as well as transport. I don't think that own or lease was part of the NZ scene during the first half of the 20th century.

Hi Fender,

Glad things are still reasonabley ok with you in Christchurch.

Years ago, about the 1960s while I was in the topdressing business we used to unload bulk fertiliser from LA and LC wagons with a clamshell bucket on a Fordson tractor. This method went back to 1959 but not sure before that.

For loading, fertiliser was loaded with a conveyor at the works but for other bulk loads a front end loader would do quite well. I have seen trucks back up a ramp and tip their load into a wagon too, but not a common practice.
I have also seen bulldozers used to load gravel in to LAs from an overhanging ramp we used to call a chinaman.
