New, where to start, some questions....

Hello folks,

I picked up a copy of TS2006 yesterday at the local office supply place. After spending about 6 or 8 hours learning how to drive and going through the scenarios im wondering what to do next.

I really dont have the time right now to create my own entire railroad, or for that matter the know how. Can i download a really large railroad that is already created and work from that? Maybe be able to customize it a little with buildings and some custom rolling stock?
I read somewhere that there were some custom maps out there but im having trouble finding anything.

Is there some graphic upgrades to the game? I see some great photos of and it seems that my graphix on the game are more simple. I have everything turned up quite a bit and have ample computer power.

I really dont understand the portal thing. Does that mean when my train runs off of the map it goes on another map and i can continue?

Thanks in advance for your answers and input.

Hi Cabinetman,
If you would like to download a large route look into Philskene's Urban IndustRail Series.

For portals you can connect to another persons computer and send say a gas train to them and they could take it to a refinery and send a train full of aviation fuel back and you send that to your airport.

For a graphics update there is none. There is something called SP1 (Service Pack 1) that fix's some problems in the game.

Hope this help's you.
And Welcome to the fourms!

Cheers,
Adam

From the screenshots that is what im looking for. The models look great. It looks like there is a series of 10 or more maps.

I had a model railroad when i was about 12 years old. I guess im looking to do something similar without all that glue and balast and all that darn wiring!

Ill try and see where this downloads and give it a shot tomorrow.

Thanks for the input.

With portals, at least those that come with TRS2006, when a train runs off of the map, it can disapear never to be seen again, return via the same portal either loaded or unloaded after a delay you set, or re-apear at a different portal.

there are tons of layouts on the DLS. you can just poke arround there and I'm sure you'll find something good.

My advice is to look here for some routes that have all assets on the DLS, unlesss you don't mind hunting down missing assets.

PS: for philskene's Industrail series, you'll need some KUIDS I've only found here.

Another long route is the Ultra Mega Route by neilsmith749 (on the DLS as well).

A cabinet maker who is sick of working with glue? Go figure! Trainz should do well by you, you can build and build and never once run into the hot water heater!
(Until your wife moves all your stuff down there, that is.)

Just took a look on the DLS and came up with about 2400 routes available from small couple board layouts to monstorous computer slowing routes. Another place to find some very nice routes is at TPR ( Train Pro Routes ) which is found here http://www.trainzproroutes.org/. You have to register to download them but that is no big deal.

You could spend the rest of your life downloading routes. There are also tasks that can be downloaded from the DLS to go along with some of these routes.

Minor picky point:
The DLS has 1 base board layouts, such as my wonderful "Elko and Lincoln", and even smaller ones such as "N scale".

I went a little and crazy and just started downloading stuff.

I did industrail 7 and 8. It has the dependencies listed underneath and a button to download all the dependencies. Under my missings it still has some listed but my downloads are not complete. I went ahead and purchased the year ticket so the speeds are quite good and I have 400 mb down already today.

I took a peak at 7 (not all the dependencies are downloaded yet so it wasnt complete) its in the editor stage and changes can be made. Can i lock it as is and just apply some trains and start operating? Is there a map like there is for the scenarios? The layout seems great and i cant imagine the work that someone has in this. My editor doesnt seem to have any trains in it so i gather that is my next quest. The quest for rolling stock!

Yeah im a cabinet man but dont use any glue. One of those managment people that doesnt get his hands dirty very often, although i did the hands on stuff at one time. i got out with all my fingers!

One more question.....(ok im sure there will be many more...)

When you download a layout with mulitples (like industail 1a, 1b, 2, etc) How do you move your trains from layout to layout? I would imagine it works well or no one would make continuing layouts. Can you send a driver on his way from layout to layout?

This is going to be time consuming. I might as well buy my wife something now for all the time ill be in the computer room sifting through this and driving trains. Good thing this is cheap. My other hobby is car racing.

Thanks again for everyones input and your patience with this newb.

Hi
routes with multiples ( most of Phils ) are just newer and bigger versions.

all you really need is the latest version.

Once you have the latest version of Austral Bay and industrail you can download sessions created by Philskene ( the creator of the routes ) and also sessions by Midland.

other routes by Phil are also on the DLS, also with sessions.

If you download all the sessions they will keep you quiet for ages.:D
and they are still coming.

have lots of fun ( in CAB mode of course)

cheers

ok im getting a little grip now...

So when i see 6a and 6b they are not connecting maps b would just be the upgrade.

So when i download 8a i have Phils newest stuff. By the way, i played around a little on 8a, wow what a map.

In the instructions on the download page he says there is a read me file. How do i get to that file? I tried one scenario and got lost without directions. It was kinda cool to look around. My 9 year old twins like to blow the horn!
I only got on the wrong track twice!

I did notice that i was the only train on the map and there was very little rolling stock. I know im missing something.

One other thing im having a slight issue with.

ive downloaded all this stuff. Engines, rolling stock, etc. I go to put them on a map and i cant find one locomotive or any rolling stock.

Also how do you take on of the maps and make them playable. I can add buildings, scenery, etc. but how do you shut that off, ad trains, and make everything usable?

Your situation is not quite clear to me.
In Surveyor, the bottom tab that looks a bit like a steam engine driver wheel should be clicked. you will then get a list of rolling stock to make a train with. Apply them to the tracks and try Control F2 to launch the game in Driver.

Hi cbntmn --

The latest version of IndustRail is "IndustRail 1a". See here:

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=18339

If you have an earlier version of this route there are just a few more downloads for this latest one. Actually, a significant part of the initial download are the products used by the interactive industries.

BesideTheRiver also uses the same tool kit of assets.

You are using TRS2006? To locate the readme and maps, fire up CMP, find the route and right click on it. Choose "Open in Windows Explorer" (I think that's it - it's been a long time since I used '06) and Windows File Explorer will open at the folder containing the route. Double click the readme and jpg files to view them.

If you search the Screen Shot Forum using "Advanced Search"/"Search by User Name" using philskene as the User you will find details about sessions available for the routes.

Adding rolling stock? In Surveyor click on the rolling stock flyout on the right side of the screen. Scroll down to the item you want to add, click on + and then click on the track. It's all really simple. As stated above, press Crtl-F2 to jump straight to Driver and away you go.

The finer details, including setting start time, weather, sky effects, ... , of the simulation are given ion the documentation.

Good luck,
Phil

Everyone,

thanks for the input. i knew switching from survey to driver was something simple and it was probably right in front of me.

I do seem to not be able to see some of my downloads. Tomorrow ill pay more attention and load only one scenario at a time and see if they come through. Phils seem to be the only ones i can see once they are downloaded.

If you download a scenario does the map automatically come with it or do i find maps that i like first and then look for scenarios that match the maps?

There is so much out there a guy could get lost. Some of the maps that come with the game (yes i do have TRS 06) are pretty good but some are not my taste. Im not much one for in town trolly type stuff or steam. I really like the 60s through the 80s. I also like a mixture of in town switching and rural riding. I did one this evening that came with the game with an amtrak and did real well until the end and i missed one red light and BAM into a sitting oncoming freight. Im not sure if there were any survivors. My 12 year old son thought it was cool. Told me he thinks the game needs more of that to raise its excitment level......(as he goes back to HALO)

Has anybody made an online part to this game where a few players can get together on one map? I would imagine that would be a good time.

Thanks again everyone for your patience and help.

cbntmn,

As my interest in Trainz is building routes and scenarios I seldom download any routes from the DLS.
Awhile back one of our old members (I believe he has left) and I'm embarassed that I don't remember his name, however, he started a website listing content, including routes on the DLS, that were error free, and/or a list of fix-its.

A query to older members, what was his website, his name, and is it still online ?
If it is still available, it might help you find some routes ?
