repairing a TransDEM based map

My old computer has an SSD on it but I think it's disconnected as I used a 2 TB platter drive and installed Win 8.1 on it. My newer used computer for this amusement park building sequel that has higher requirements I think has Win 10 on an SSD. Besides disk space, does more RAM help and a beefier graphics card? How do you increase your page file? I might try that to improve Trainz performance on my old 6 year old computer.
More RAM always helps. Windows 10 is a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit operating systems will take the RAM and allocate that to applications. If there are 64-bit applications they too will use as much RAM as necessary and operate much more efficiently.

A more recent video card will provide better graphics, but you need a CPU that's capable of handling the data. An older CPU can't keep up with the much faster newer video cards and the system will not perform much faster than it already does. The other issue is power requirements. Newer video cards have different power plugs that an older power supply currently in the system may not have, and the cards may not even fit in the computer case.

To increase your page file:

Click on settings.
Click on System
Click on Advanced system settings.
Click on the Advanced tab on the small window that opens up.
Click on Settings... located under Performance.
Click on Advanced tab (a different one)

Located in the lower part is virtual memory.

Click on change.
Choose the drive where you want to set your page file (virtual memory).
Click on Custom size.
Put in the same number in both Initial size and Maximum size. This is in MB

The recommended value is 1.5 times the amount of RAM in your system. If you already have a system page file, this will be additional and this will help. I've set mine to 2 times and have had excellent results with large routes and merging.

Click on Set

This will create the page file. Reboot as requested.

In some ways you can't get around buying a new computer to have the newest CPU's and GPU's. But they are expensive unless you buy one used on ebay. I only bought a newer one because a computer game released last Nov. required Win 10 which I did not have, a 6 or 8 gb graphics card, my 6 year old computer has a 3 gb, and DirectX 12. I found one used on ebay for under $500. Technology marches on and if you don't upgrade you'll be left in the dust. Another thing I discovered is that VGA is obsolete, it's an analog video only signal, and newer computers have HDMI only which is a digital signal with both video and audio. I had to use an adapter I had to connect a spare VGA monitor to the HDMI computer and connect external speakers to a speaker jack.
