New Aircraft

Boeing 777-319 Air New Zealand "Hobbit"

I agree! Stellar work Ian!

I will confess that I've been bugging Ian for the Turbo Otter float plane for a while. Another toy for my Vancouver Seaplane terminals (and the Beaver to follow).

Thanks to some Vulcan Magic, I've been able to upgrade my TAM Airlines Boeing 777-32W with a few niceties to align it with the shorter 200 series aircraft.
The main change has been some mapping realignment of the wing root area. This has let me finish off a request from Gordon, the Air New Zealand "Hobbit" livery.

You'll notice some taxiway markings in the screenshot above. They are some specials that I asked Bill (Willem2) to do for my YVR route. They include ground markings at gates and hold patterns on taxiways. Thanks Bill. All available on DLS.

The origins of the paintwork (picture files) is best left unsaid but the result is clear. I have done a 4x resolution in order to keep the integrity of the murals so the download file is about 19Mb. Sorry. If your computer can't handle the detail in driver, you'll need to change the file size of "main_ANZ 777-319 Hobbit.tga" from 2048x2048 to 1024x1024.

Excellent work Rob, good to see the hobbit flying. Thanks also to Ian for the extra work needed on the model.

Lockheed LC-130 Hercules - Flying Lessons Pt 1

The recently uploaded LC-130 has a number of differences when compared with the standard C-130 model that Ian has just revamped. The following is a bit of a story tracing 'Elsie' (L.C.) from McChord (Seattle) to Antarctica along with some tips on flying and setting up a track for her..

Early morning at McChord Airbase. An Elsie sits alongside a C-17 loading up for the long flight to Christchurch.

LC-13001PayloadMcChord1_zps9b26a93d.jpg

The first subtle difference with Elsie is the payload. I've changed out the military jeeps and dozer that are standard with the C-130 for oil drums and some building products. Not much use for earth moving equipment or jeeps on the polar glaciers. If you don't like the selection, you'll have to change the config.txt file in the same way as any other Trainz rolling stock.

The shot below shows the main physical difference with Elsie, the skis for landing on snow. This includes the black skirt under the nose cone with the 2 spotlights. The front ski retracts up under the skirt.

LC-130FrontSki1_zpsaadca136.jpg

Elsie lifts off for Christchurch. I'll skip the long boring flight & the stop in Christchurch (sounds like a job for Gordon). Notice that the skis remain retracted for tarmac operations. This is the default mode for the model when placed on a route.

In flight the wheels retract as well leaving the aircraft reasonably aerodynamic.

LC-13004Cruise2_zps2f02ffa1.jpg

If you place an aircraft action trigger setting 14 to slow the aircraft back from cruise speed, the flaps extend once the speed drops under 250km/h (the flaps are a new feature for the C-130 upgrade). The wheels then deploy at 180km/h. The trigger will bring the speed all the way back to about 65km/h so I tend to ramp the speed up to 170km/h again. With the wheels down a carefully placed trigger 15 will lower the skis.

LC-13005SkisDown1_zps10a4302b.jpg

Place a trigger 3 or 7 just before the landing area to flare the aircraft for landing. Place a trigger 4 at the touchdown location and a snow plume will activate for 30 seconds and another 3 or 7 to drop the nose. You'll need to set the runway length to match the 30 seconds of plume. Part of that will be easier with a trigger 9 about half way along the runway to slow the aircraft to stop. This adds the consistency you'll need provided you approach the ice runway at the same speed each time. The whiteout can be very disorienting in Trainz as in real life so it's easy to overrun the runway area.
The same trigger 4 setting will have a tyre smoke puff with the skis retracted. This feature is linked to the trigger 15 position.

Here Elsie is parked up at the Antarctic base with the C-17 from before. These two aircraft are the lifeline to the folks working down on the frozen continent.

Lockheed LC-130 Hercules - Flying Lessons - Pt 2

Later Elsie winds up the engines to take off. A trigger 4 at the start of the runway will set off the snow plume at the same time as the engines power up for take off.

Placement of the JATO trigger (8) takes a bit of trial and error. You need the take off time to be 30 seconds so that it clears right as the aircraft lifts off but the JATO needs to fire for about 6-8 seconds before that and continues to fire a few seconds into flight. It's part trigger placement & part driver skill/consistency. Make sure you add a trigger 3 or 7 (flaring) before the lift off area & another once the aircraft gains enough altitude to level off.

Another trigger 15 will retract the skis after take off. Elsie's job done she clears the ice sheet and heads back to Christchurch to do it all again.

Intense activity on this thread, these days!!

Thanks all for your work!
Due to Ian's magic, and Rob's participation, we have now a nearly complete canadian aircraft family, a great SR-71 Blackbird, many aircraft updates to startup standards, and many more.. Try them, you will stop playing with trains...

Today, I'll stay within the Canadian family with these Canadair CL415 water bombers. These one are operated by the French Sécurité Civile, mainly in the south and Corsica.
I made 3 aircrafts with 3 different registration numbers. Carefully read the config.txt to know how to operate all the provided animations.

Parking in a remote area at Marseille Marignane.

Fire alert! Pelican 32 taxies towards runway.

Over the fire spot. Drop of water on the flames. May be several water refills will be necessary at the nearby lake.

Good idea, these containers, Gordon.

Been playing with Vulcan's updated DC-3 mesh...

...and come up with three re-skins. Below is ZK-AOJ or 'Piopio', in the 1950's (mostly polished metal) colours for NZ National Airways Corporation.

ycap.jpg

I should say mostly in the 1950's colours, as I haven't figured the easiest way to get the red stripe around the engine yet.

Also completed in 1960's 'Skyliner' colours, and in Mount Cook blue. All on DLS if you wanted to check them out.
