New Aircraft

Hi Bob,

Textures failing to load can be a number of issues - some suggestions;

The texture is the wrong size - they have to be 1024 by 1024, 512 by 128 for example with the longer side no larger than 4 times the shorter side. This should not be a problem for you if you are modifying the original 1024 by 1024 file.
The tga texture must be saved as Uncompressed from your paint program.
The name in Max is incorrect, we need to use particular names such as body.m.onetex or body.m.reflect dfor instance on Max, you have no access to that part of the issue, so it is not the problem here.
You have exported to the wrong place (though you have checked the file time stamp) so that should be ok.
You have renamed the file incorrectly.
You have named the file incorrectly in the texture.txt file.

I have just uploaded the next model, the F-15. I have tried to do a much more detailed cockpit, with improved night lighting. On startup, the pilot turns on the flashers, then checks the rudder and tail planes before starting the engines, so there is a small delay before the engine sound kicks in. The exhausts light up in sequence. Flaps are automatic based on speed. You will notice that the engine intakes droop down with the flaps to provide more body lift at slow speeds.

It has the usual complement of missiles, which can be changed in Surveyor, including the animated ones.

This is the new lit interior:

f-15_101.jpg

It has an animated Heads Up Display (HUD), something new. When you go above 300kph an animated aircraft appears in the HUD. It is an American AWAC so don't shoot it down. ;)

Hope you like it, should be available soon. As usual, read the config description or check my website for information.

Hi Ian

Thanks for your suggestions

1. The picture size is 1024 x 1024

2. I don't know how I would save uncompressed or not...I just use the 'save' or 'save as' if renaming. How do I establish whether the file is uncompressed?

3. I have double checked the file names

I'm giving up on this now till Thursday - Trainz is trying to take over my life.

Bob

I've just looked at the /body folder and the .tga copied back from the working folder is 1606KB whereas the copy of the original file says 3074KB - so has the file become compressed? if so, how?

also - almost certainly not relevent but this system is 64-bit

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Y::clap: Ian you're a miracle worker! Only two more jets on my list that I'm missing now that you've cranked out that beautiful F-15, an F-35 and a SR-71. Keep 'em coming!!!!!

Lol about that AWAC... That'd actually be a really cool feature to add, make it put up an enemy aircraft on the screen and when you shoot the missiles it blows up and crashes. Just a bit of food for thought...

Bob, I downloaded Paint.net to check.

When you save the file you are presented with a Save Configuration dialogue box. By default the Compress (RLE) is ticked, so untick this box, that should fix it. You should find that in future the box will now remain unticked.

Ian

Hi Ian

Unticked the box and voila no problem. Default settings are not something I will change unless I know what I'm doing.

Not the first time something simple like this has caused me hours of rechecking - so frustrating. Anyway will make a start (hopefully) on actually producing something in a day or two.

Your F-15 is pretty impressive - what about an Icelandair 757-200 as the HUD target? It would serve them right for not controlling their volcano?

Just been watching two interesting programmes on DeHavilland - the Mosquito bomber & fighter and the early Comet crashes. I thought I saw a Mosquito at Archerfield many years ago but now I'm not so sure.

Many thanks
Bob

I may have gone a bit obsessive compulsive on this one folks.
As promised I completed a number of Frontier Airlines aircraft. At the minute they are only A319 variants (based on Vulcan's new shortened A320 model). I set out to do maybe 10 or 15 but have ended up with 41! It was easy enough to change out tails & numbers so I figured I'd do as many as I could be bothered.....

Frontiersample.jpg

Each aircraft has a different tail animal & name. Check the Frontier web link below for a semi-complete list.

I suggest that if you don't want to download all of them that you look up the names on the website and choose the ones you need.

I knew when I originally did these aircraft that if I ever had to upgrade them it would be a lengthy exercise.
Well they've now been upgraded to startup versions. It took a bit to make it happen but they are all done. They're listed with their upgraded KUID version below.
The Spirit Airlines A319 has also been upgraded to a startup version. <KUID2:590184:100326:2>

Thanks for the F-15's Vulcan! The Air Force is pissed with me right now... I tried flying around over a WIP route I'm making, I took off 4 times, and guess how many times I crashed. Whoever said that the third time's a charm is a nasty liar. The sad part is, I was going so slow that I technically should've stalled, and I still couldn't make that second curve.

It will come out of your pay packet, back to driving ground vehicles for you.

For the aircraft you have to set the Derail to None in your session: In Surveyor, Main Menu....Edit Session....QuickDrive rule....edit...."Set the default derailment realism level to....." (tick None).

They go too fast to take the curves otherwise.

Efforts so far ........

I've gone back to 1999+ colour scheme - far smarter than the latest in my opinion. Obviously a lot to do to make it presentable but hoping might pick up some tips/hints before my next crack at it.. When I've finished playing around, I will probably scrap this and start again.

1. Lettering copied along with RH side body very fuzzy - nowhere near as clear as the lettering copied directly from a LH side photo. Should I edit the photo in normal scale or scale it right up high - I've tried both and can't say that either is best.
2. Have managed to match the nose/front ok with the mirror image but the back is well out lengthwise (the entire width of the purple tailband -see below) but is aligned properly (realised that I need to level the aircraft image horizontally and centre it square on far as possible both horizontally and vertically.
3. The Flying Lady emblem is a mess - haven't a clue at moment how to deal with that other than wipe it!
4. Had lot of trouble getting front door to look right - either too forward and curved round over the cockpit window or nose wasn't right.
5. Why are the windows so unclean - I am thinking of overpainting them then drawing them in from scratch.

Being a bit shadeblind doesn't help - my wife tells me the titles background is completely different to the fuselage but that's got to be re-positioned anyway because it doesn't sit right. Same with the tail and engines.

Hopefully I will get into this and speed up a bit, otherwise it will be quicker to build the real thing. I am trying - some people say I'm very trying.

That looks like a great start so far Bob! I wish you the best of luck with it, here's hoping it doesn't give you too many problems.

First my compliments on your aircraft. And like SOUTHERN1581 I to crashed. Oh I wasn't happy just crashing the F16. Nope that was too easy. I crashed the C-17, C-130 and just about any plane I could get my hands on. So I thank you for the tip on preventing me from nose diving air craft right into the ground.
BTW here is a C-17 taking off from Shaw Airforce Base in Sumter SC. At the time this was taken this was a work in progress.

amrail2000,
I trust the C-17 has been replaced with the Charleston version I skinned recently. :D

Bob,
I'll have to have a think about your struggles. I have a few ideas but nothing definitive for some of your problems. I haven't done an A340 reskin yet so I'm not familiar with that model.
The resolution issue looks to be a photo editing software technique issue. Unfortunately I can't help with that because I don't use the same software.

Some advice with the model mapping in general.
The curved surfaces are tricky. The further from the horizontal centerline of the fuselage you go, the more the pixels get stretched vertically. Hence the problems with the "Virgin Atlantic" lettering and the front door. The nose will have similar issues but more compact. I suspect the lady emblem issue could be a combination of the shape and the photo editing software technique. Sometimes you have to do some distortion work or a bit of fudging. This is where re-skins start becoming somewhat artistic. Maybe the entire fuselage texture needs to be moved down a touch (RH & LH). 3 or 4 pixels can make a huge difference at the top and bottom of the fuselage.
I'm not sure why the misalignment has occurred on the tail sash. Maybe Pascal has some ideas since he's skinned a few of these. You'll find it easier to fix the tail first then do some fudging to the front.

Hopefully these comments help and not hinder....

Rob

Hi Rob

Any comments are a help and not a hindrance. I need to learn a lot about photo editing - that's where some of the time is going - did think maybe needed GIMP (Pascal says he uses Paint.net and GIMP so waiting to see if he has any comment on this.

I've been trying different things to see what happens to the model and I'm sure with more tries I'd get the tail right eventually. The model has now become a test rig to try things out on - hence the intention to scrap it and start again when I've finished experimenting.

As I say, any comments from you, Pascal and Ian (and anyone else) much appreciated...

Bob

The Beechcraft Baron is now on the DLS. This has an improved interior and night lighting, better sound, and adds to the small aircraft available.

Apparently Auran got hacked folks. They've done a server backup from last Saturday (so Vulcan tells me). Unfortunately, any forum posts since then have been lost.
