Nature Screenshots! (BIG and NUMEROUS pictures!)

Skies

I’ve managed to work out how to do skies and get them into trainz. Here are some examples of my first efforts.

I’m also trying textures, with mixed results so far. More later (possibly!)

Cheers
Casper

Thank you for your kind comments.

Here’s a distant view of Evening Star pulling some maroon Mk1’s through the English countryside.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

A whole weekend without your screenshots - these forum crashes are too much to bear!
..
Thanks Deane:o

...Is that dead tree the horse is looking at a Speedtree?
No!

The Forum down time has allowed more time on other matters.

  • I’ve made some more skies.
.
  • I’ve got TrainzTuner to work. It's only taken four years!

Here are a couple of your cows taking advantage of the increased viewing distance...

..not a SpeedTree in sight!

Is there something wrong with Hostthenpost lately? I can only get the first few 'lines' of the image if they are on Hostthenpost, the rest is just grey, but I can readily see anything hosted on Photobucket or Imageshack. Am I alone in this (i.e. something wrong with my PC?).

A couple more from a work in progress using sky and time of day changes.

@Dinorius_Redundicus
Deane,
No problems with hostthenpost for me, or any others. However, I've had it happen with various file hosting sites from time to time and never got to find out why. It seems to sort itself out eventually!

Thanks Bob.

Yes, I like that one and have used it a lot. It’s not one of mine though. I must do a red one!

It’s fire_sky <kuid:87907:21000> by meridious. You can get it from the DLS.

I reduced the tones a bit by setting the clock to around 0600. Somehow the early morning light seemed to produce a subtler effect against the landscape.

.
After using the instructions in this thread to create my own skies from original photographs I thought I’d try painting my own.

I painted this in Gimp using a plain blue total fill, followed by a few streaks of wiggly dark red, dark green and white lines.

A few minutes of smearing, using the smudge tool at various radius settings, gives the cloud effect.

I tiled together the same image x4 as per the normal sky creation convention to achieve the final .tga uncompressed 512x512 image. To finish off, I then added a few more streaks and smudged them into the image to break up the repetitive mirror image effect as much as possible. At this final stage I made sure that I did not change any of the sky tones at the edges of the image because that would show up starkly in game where the image is tiled several times above the baseboard.

Thank you, contributors to the quoted thread for the guidance which encouraged me to have a go with skies.

It took a while, but I finally got it.
