when i was at one of strasburg noon shop tours they had 475 tear down for repairs. heck strasburg shop crews can rebuilt 1361 under 6 months.:)

Thats not the issue. The problem was how the restoration was started. It was mismanaged, it had to little money from the start, and none of those involved had any idea what they were getting into in terms of what needs to be restored, verse what needed to be replaced.

1361's big problem is its boiler. Several of the plates are far too thin, and need to be repleaced. Thats a big undertaking, that Strasburg can easily do (they replaced a whole patch on RGS 20), but its expensive. Strasburg has to pay its workers, so those paying Strasburg need to have the money to begin with. The Altoona Museum simply does not have the money

the state should pay half of the restoration and strasburg pay for the other half.

The weird thing is though, the boiler has ALWAYS been too thin, even when in PRR service, yet it has lasted almost 100 years....let's just say they don't build things to last anymore. DP, You expect a State without a budget to pay for a restoration? good luck on that when the governor hates RR's.

strasburg should buy PRR 1361.:D

Why should the state of Penn and strasburg pay for another museum's engine? The Pennsy was notorious for getting bad metal in their boilers and then after the botched attempt to make it an oil burner it will almost certainly require a new boiler. While it would be nice to see a K4 run there are so many other engines out there with a far better chance at steaming.

at this point, I will accept a stuffed version of PRR 1361....until they can get the money to Successfully restore it.

hey i accept a live steam 1361 run at strasburg.:) DANNY PHANTOM
yeah, enjoy the never-ending wait for it to steam again(which really pains me, it is one of my favorites). Btw, Danny Phantom does not rule, it has been canceled for 2 years.

I agree, most of the major work is already done, spoof it up nice, and leave the boiler work for later, but keep the locomotive indoors.

if the national railroad musuem let strasburg lease the 261 the 261 would be back in steam.
why why are you so RANDOM. What you say makes no sense what so ever.
please stop posting threads about needless things that we cant to anything about and stop posting this about strasburg. Sure it IS awesome but they arnt going to restore another steam locomotive because they already have enough to do.

sorry to put you off topic i dont know why the 261 should be in 2nd retirement? it should run with steam locmotives like STRASBURG 90. then sit in a musuem then PRR 1223.
