Merging Routes

Get over it
I'm having a problem getting my brain working around route layers and session layers. What I'm trying to do is merge leeferr's two excellent routes, Mtn Div. and Sparten Div into one route. When I choose merge I get the two maps and aligning them is no problem. Under merge layers I have two route layers. Before I screw up a lot of work what is my next step? Delete one of the route layers, rename, click on one and click merge or what? Thanks.

A clone is a good thing... :)

When merging, click on the layers and then just click on the arrow thing for moving in the layers . In that dialog box that comes up, just click on the Route layer and it will automatically merge the two layers together. The interface isn't quite as intuitive as it should be, but it works without thinking too hard about it which we all tend to do sometimes. :D

Kidding aside, the only time you would want to save a layer is when it contains other data such as special track or session settings for portals you don't want to lose. The layers can always be merged later once the routes have been merged together.

Thanks everyone for replying. I was doing it correctly but I kept getting an error message that Trainz isn't responding and have to shut down the program. I have no idea what the problem is. I'll keep working n it. Thanks again.

Hey guys. Just a thought here. Could the problem be that I'm working in edit session and trying to save as route. I'm working both routes in edit session. What would happen if I merged both routes in the session layer instead of the route layer?

You need to be working in the route editor rather than the session editor. If the routes each contain the name "route layer" then one will need to be changed before they can be merged.

dnevans8 - according to Shane's tutorial I've been doing everything correctly. My screens look exactly like his tutorial. Please explain what you mean by: if the routes each contain the name "route layer" then one will need to be changed? Changed where? At the merging screen or where? Thanks.

If you are doing it as per my tutorial, part of it involves merging the two route layers together, so you shouldn't need to worry about the namings.

Shane - In TS12 when I have merged routes if both routes have a route layer called "Route Layer" I get an error message and I am told to change one. Your tutorial shows this in the fourth picture!!!

stouthm - By default all routes have a route layer called " Route Layer". If the routes you want to merge both have a layer called "Route Layer" then you will need to change one of them in the route editor by going into the layers tab down the right hand side of the screen, then select the layer, doubleclick the name which will highlight it, then rename it.

That is correct, but it is possible at that stage to merge the two Route Layers so it becomes one, which will allow the merge to be done, as per pictures 5 and 6.

That's the message I'm getting and I think that is what is causing "trainz has encountered a problem and needs to shut down".

dnevans8 - forgive an old fart for being cautious but I've spent a lot of time on these two routes changing them to fit my needs and I don't want to screw them up. Could you please show me what you mean by renaming a layer. Thank you.

If you are using TS12 pre-SP1 (build 49922) or earlier this is a known problem, and is stated clearly at the top of the tutorial. TS12 SP1 usually does not have this problem unless you are merging two large routes together.

stouthm - Firstly to be on the safe side you probably need to clone the two routes in Content Manager or do a save as for each of the routes in "Edit Route" and give them a new name as was suggested earlier.

And now for the important bit, I have to admit it was me having a senior moment thinking that there was a button to do the rename on the screen, in fact you double click the layer name you want to rename which highlights the name and allows you to edit it.

Sorry for the confusion but it is a while since I last did it and I think I found the method more by accident the first time.

I have edited my original post to avoid confusion for others reading this thread.

This old guy must be doing something wrong. I renamed the route-layer as test-layer, at the main menu I chose merge routes and as in the tutorial's picture #4 I had two choices under route layers, test-layer and route layer. I chose route-layer and clicked merge and still got the message about Trainz having to shut down. After renaming the route-layer is there another step that I'm missing? I don't click on the + button, I just go to the merge routes line. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

@ Shane - TS12, no patches, build 499922.

@Mike - love your routes. What I've done is change most of the textures, minor track work, different industries to fit my needs, changed to pofig's trees but you did the hard part what with all the terrain changes. If I download the Ashland Central System than I lose all the work I've put into the two separate routes. BUT, I will look into it. Thanks for all the effort you have put into the game.

OK - you need to check the size of both routes. Build 49922 and previous builds are known for crashing when merging large routes.
