Locomotive Overhaul On National Geographic channel

hmm, great to see they're just overhauling and not scrapping, as that's usually the modis operandi of the show (break stuff apart and scrap it).

I turn this on expecting to see a museum overhauling a relic so it can live on for the future, but what do i see? NRE turning a beautiful GP9 into a goddamn GENSET. Ugh. this disgusts me.

Thanks for the heads up. Did not get to see it last night but will be setting the DVR tonight, if the stroms dont put the power out.

I also watched it. I was not happy that they ruined a GP9. The loco it became is as aesthetically pleasing as the gp9 was.
I also like how the people doing the show did not get the track gauge correct.
I guess the good part is that the frame and trucks will live on.

I, saw it myself. I was horrified to see that ex-CN GP9 (Yes, the paint scheme is a dead give away.) I was expecting them to overhaul the GP9 for future use, but they turned it into a Genset. A Genset is a great locomotive, but I was expecting a rebuild to keep it looking as a GP9 for many more years. Before it started, I expected them to show SP 4449 or UP 844 and the work needed to maintain an excursioning locomotive. But still, it was amazing to watch. But not as fun, as I had expected.

I watched this last night at 9:00 p. m. Yes, it is sad to see some thing vintage get ripped apart, its original parts seperated forever and even some of them scrapped (such as this GP9's long hood), but at least the locomotive did not entirely get scrapped. Sure, a Genset is modern, but fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness is important, so I am not very unhappy at all with the resulting locomotive. I speak as a collector of many vintage things who is so obsessive over keeping every fleck of my stuff around that I will do my best to save every single fleck of cardboard or whatever that flakes off of a vintage original box to some of my stuff. :o ;)

Regards.

Tonight, at 10 PM Eastern, there's a program on National Geographic Channel about breaking down and overhauling a 50 year old locomotive.
It'll also be on at 1AM, May 27, and 6 PM, June 2.
