Maybe Auran is concerned that a third party may also establish an independent DLS and they want to tie up as many people as possible before that happens.
There's no reason why a second DLS wouldn't be successful, considering that none, or very little of the content actually belongs to Auran who are now working under a completely different banner and incorporating community content in their new game packages.
With the number of complaints about the current DLS constantly failing to come up with the goods, maybe an independent DLS is the answer. As I'm reluctant to purchase a FCT because of the amount I download, one suggestion could be a pay per item scheme, or even a pay per megabyte one.
I'm not talking sheep stations here, just a few dollars per gigabyte to cover costs. With a suitably designed program, people could even be compensated for the effort they put in. Sure Auran is supplying a server, but they're also reaping the benefits from two directions: (1) by you doing the work, they don't have to, and (2) they can then charge people to access that work.
Downloading without a FCT is akin to downloading a blockbuster movie on dialup, so a FCT is almost essential.
I for one won't be taking the offer up because I like to pay as I go.
