Kuji Rail sim release date Friday 5th October 2007

One more on the list of disappointed Kujuguys, like me and many others. :o

It took you two months. :hehe:

Let's keep trainzing all year long.

After having to listen to months of bs from kuju about how good their simulator is. I've now played it and found it the most unfriendly unsatisfying rail sim I've ever used. I would Rate Trainz as number 1, BVE number two, with RS just making it in at number 3.

The user interface must be the worst I've seen in any piece of software for many many years.

Even with the graphics pumped up with everything at max there are some graphical floors that really let it down. Such as the sharp contrasting edge to all ballast. Tracks look very unrealistic. With Aurans default track from the Original Trains giving it a run for it's money :D

If you like train sims you will enjoy it, but it's not coming close to Trainz.

Hi, Communist -

Thanks for the info. I still haven't tried the full sim - only the demo - so every nugget of detail helps build a bigger picture.

One of the coments you made which grabbed my attention was the bit about the user interface. Why did you think it was the worst you'd seen?

I just got Rail Simulator today. I think its great. I have register on there web sight I still didnt get no email from them

Just wondering

Now that RS has been released in the US, GamesDomain has done a Review on it. They gave it a 4 of 5, and the reviewer was fairly positive in his praise. Enough so, that if I had no other source, I would probably go buy the thing. However, must of what I've read here (and we know we are a bit biased, myself included) would steer me away from it.

Having said all that, can I get an answer to one question that to my mind the reviewer didn't touch: Does RS have a level of control for us DCC types. I am not into the "hard" driving business, so would like to know.

What Rik81 just wrote plus questions of my own.

What does it provide for a: someone who likes to create content of any type, b: works on routes occasionally, and c: never drives in cab mode.

I think a: has been touched on before and it was said that 3rd party creation by non-group creators as we know it will not be possible.

This poses another question, will Gmax be able to export to RS?

Cheers

No there is no such thing as DCC in RS and that really sucks.

For those that want to check out KRS or whatever it 's called, have a go at it. Let us Trainzers know what you think about it in the appropriate forum here.

It's really not about Trainz versus some other rail sim.

They have their thing and the best of luck to them just like Trainz has their thing. Hopefully the posters there won't feel the need to tell them about Trainz and of course the Trainz Community would appreciate the reciprocity I'm sure.

Cheers

It's so sweet having Trainz in your hip pocket....you can wait until the bugs are worked out and the price goes down before you try different simulators. I know I'm interested, but I can wait...

Personally I love the game, if your more of a surveyor person, but like to tackle a new challenge, and love the smell of fresh coffee in the cab of an engine in the morning, then this is a pretty good game and you might like it.

:D

$38 dollars......NO WAY!!

Same feelings here as well... The first Copy I've see was 2 days ago at an EB Games store for like 38 bucks.... I like to keep my options open for Railroad Simulatorz, if one day I dont (or just lacking the ability) to make my own world in Trainz-I could just hop in the conductors seat (probilbly engineers Seat) and go for a trip, just to unwind. Plus, to much of one thing is rather boring. :D

KRS has a choice of three driving modes, simple, intermediate and expert. Simple is very similar to DCC but not quite identical.

A free restricted demo of KRS can be downloaded from
http://www.ea.com/railsim but it's a big file (471MB). The demo allows you to drive for about twenty minutes as part of one scenario on one route, starting at Bath (England). It doesn't seem to have any restrictions on how many times it can be run. AFAIK the demo version doesn't provide access to functions such as the editing of layouts. Nor does it have much in the way of documentation. So far I have managed to decouple but not to change any junctions (the scenario may lock out that functionality intentionally, which is quite reasonable of course).

My assessment, based on the demo:
No bugs experienced, the demo is stable.
The graphics are ok but no better than Trainz.
The controls are generally extremely awkward, for example the only way I found to tilt the camera up and down is with the mouse, and moving/zooming on the 2D map is most peculiar.
Without any documentation I was unable to assess vital factors such as route editing, AI, signalling and scenario creation.

After all the generally very poor comments and reviews I won't be purchasing KRS, at least until an SP1 is released, if it ever is. MSTSII might be of more interest, perhaps, once we know more about it.

The UK version of KRS has three English routes and one German route. In the US version of KRS, the Newcastle-York route is replaced with the US route. Not only the routes are switched, content for one route is replaced by content for another route. If you create routes using the content for the Newcastle-York or US routes, people not using the correct version of KRS can't use the routes. I think that Kuju made a very terrible mistake. I am very disappointed in Kuju.

Yes, it is quite unfortunate that Kuju did not include all the routes in both packages but honestly seeing this is a trainz forum i would think most of you would realize that TC will have the same issue. something to think about.....

RSD will hopefully be releaseing the US route to us uk people :)

Overmars, that sounds like what they might be intending to do. I read this on railsimulator.com: "In the coming weeks, we’ll be issuing an upgrade which will bring the North American and European programs in line and, as well as providing new functionality and fixing known issues, will allow all users to install RSDevTools to create their own scenarios." They also have a link to a set of 41 tutorial videos that show how some of the features work. I found them quite interesting.

I was thinking of getting a copy but like Ed I'll probably hold off till they chase out the bugs. Trainz 04/06/TC1,2,3 will keep me occupied for some time yet - there's no rush.

I may have missed this but I haven't seen anything - does krs support a scripting language interface similar to Trainz scripting API?

Bob Pearson

Thanks, John. I'll have to check into that. Scripting is one of the frustrating parts of TRS that I seem to enjoy.
