I too feel that you are a definite asset here, Shane. You are the "pre-helpdesk" that have set users with problems straight innumerable times. If your concern was with that recent thread about .IM files, I would have stopped trying to convince someone that their view was incorrect after about 2 posts. However, it is to your credit that you state your position and consistently stick with it.
Don't let a few naysayers bother you.

My granddaughter is autistic (well she would be officially declared so if the penny pinchers in Worcester county council got their finger out of the pie
but thats a different story). Anyway I know she see things in black and white - there are no grey areas for her. Its either right or wrong, left or right. The point is she often wonders why people dont always understand where her train of thoughts are coming from. All she knows and feels is a desire to help. Ive been the recipient of your help many times since Ive been involved with Trainz. Everyone can get over enthusiastic occasionally (my granddaugheter drives me mad with my little pony lol ). but without that enthusiasm many of us would be floundering a lot more than we are. So all I can say is keep up the good work - your efforts are worth more than you know.

One thing about these forums is the number of ass-holes that "reside" here. Everyone knows who they are (they aren't fooling anyone). They look for ways to push people's buttons, and when we let them, they are delighted.

Thankyou to all who have responded (reason I'm doing it like this is because there's quite a few names and it would take a while to individually respond). I'm glad to see that I've still got quite a few friends here, although I do find it concerning that a minority of members (although no-one that has responded so far in this thread is in that category) seem to find pleasure in provoking others (they know who they are). Coincidentally, a few of said members usually moan when they are found out to be doing wrong anyway (like using dodgy versions of Trainz)
I'm feeling somewhat happier now, but I'm hoping that the people that do stir up trouble think twice before doing it, especially if it's towards me or anyone who has responded in this thread.
Regarding the T2 Support thread, I have left a final reply on that thread to try and encourage those who are unable or unwilling to pledge towards T2 to consider promoting the project.

I do think too that most trainzers know you as a serious person , nothing wrong with that either. ( a few did get a smiley out of you now and then though

@cascade - when you collect 13 years backpay from your ( ex ? ) boss please remember to deposit a generous pledge.

Hi Shane,
You can't please all of the people all of the time! There will always be people ready to knock those with the talent you obviously have.
I purchased a new computer about 5 months ago which prompted me to return to Trainz after an absence of a couple of years. Without the help and advice I found from you and others by trawling through the forum I would have given up on Trainz months ago. The community would be much the poorer without you. Please try to ignore the knockers and carry on the good work.
Please do not give up. Your talent is invaluable.

Personally, I think you are nothing but an asset to the community, you are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and you make all your points clearly and consisely. Keep doing what you are doing and don't sweat the small stuff.
If you'll allow a little amateur psychology I'll offer up some ideas. We all know on the internet, there are people who live to be asshats and big bags of douche from the anonymity of the computer in their mother's basement. Also, as you said, you may have trouble perceiving nuances in what people post, things like sarcasm or good natured ribbing. Also, your enthusiasm can be taken as fanboy-ism, some here have a decidedly more negative outlook on Trainz and N3V than you. Some people are just contrarian by nature, I can admit to that myself at times. Finally, your precision in answering questions and going deeper than actually may be necessary can make you seem like a pedantic know it all to some.

Some information is better than none at all - and more than often you have provided that long before N3V responds to forum questions.
Turn the other cheek mate and wear the mantle of a politician and you will survive the worst of any forum onslaught - and do not leave us in our hour of need.

Trainz is such a complex beast that it is nearly impossible to know everything about any particular topic. Shane does much better than most. There was one person, when a particular question came up - which it did frequently, always responded with a link to a "newcomers start here" for that topic. Perhaps we should have more of those and simply respond as that person did.

It caught my attention because I was about to make a similar response to Shane. So I sat back and reread the question again - several times. The question was very deep and rather technical and I was surprised that it was asked at all. Without going into details it was the type of question that would normally elicit very few responses.
In summary, I guess one has to look at who actually asked the question. There are some who have been around for a long time and will know the obvious answers, but in their case they may be looking for a meaningful discussion on a complex and obscure topic. Those tend to be my favourite discussions.
We can't all be nice all the time and even the best of us have bad days. I believe it's called "being human".
