Im new, but what next with 2006?

Hi everyone.
Im new to trainz (and train sims in general) so bear with me!
Ive just gotten used to controlling my train and plain with whatever the default install gave me (apparently sp1 is included with me 2006).

I got this dvd as a gift, but now I see that im a few years behind. How does this whole idea work?

Do i upgrade and download/buy 2010:EE (over my slow 384kbps adsl)?
Do i sim online, is that what you do?

I sound like a noobie I know, but coming from flight sims where "standard install content" is silly, I don't know what to do.

Ive googled the whole railworks vs trainz thing, and read into a lot of wars so I won't go there, but what do I do next :wave:

I am taking for granted that you have installed TRS2006 program.

TS2009 & TS2010 are two entrely different programs, from TRS2006.

You can not run both TRS2006 & TS2010 both at the same time.

And you can not upgrade TRS2006 to become TS2010.

You can have TS2010 and TRS2006 loaded on your PC, but they are separately running from one another.

You can import some TRS2006 content into TS2010 and run it in compatability mode.

You can have alot of fun with TRS2006 forever, although it will be unsupported by Auran this September.

I would get a several month FCT and download all the TRS2006 content that you can, in the meantime, before September comes along.

You could "S**tcan" TRS2006...and instead go out and purchase TS2010, but I would suggest buying the hard DVD disk version, and not the internet Digital Download version.

Railworks, MSTS, and other simulators, can not be imported into Trainz.

It is my understanding that in order to run TS2010, you need a higher end PC with alot of Ram, a sizable hard drive, a upgraded video card, and it runs best on a desktop PC.

Mac's are not entirely compatable, and Dell is not the perfect machine for Trainz.

Operating Systems XP, Vista, & Windows 7, work equally well.

But if you have a low end PC, your framerates will be very poor.

You would have to have a really good laptop in order to run TS2010.

I plan to use TRS2006 until the end of days (December 17th 2012) the day the Myan calander predicts the end of the world. Feel free to PM me with questions and suggestions on using TRS2006.

I will definitely attempt to obtain TS2010, however shops don't stock it here. So itll be an international DVD order for me, or download

I'd recommend getting TS10 on DVD. Most earlier content will transfer over to TS10 (or is already built into it), though some assets have errors so won't show up in game and you'll need to fix those or not use them. You didn't say what your PC specs are, but I'd say if you have a desktop PC from the last few years, with a dual core processor, a couple of gigs of RAM and a reasonable vid card (ie. OK for gaming, not low end), then you should be OK, though you may need to play with the setup a bit (eg. the slider for draw distance). I originally got TS10 working with a P4 processor and a 7900GT card so, despite what some may say, you don't need a Cray supercomputer to get it working!

AMD dual core, 4 GB ram, ATi HD4870 and windows7
I read like 6000 forum posts, think Im sold on 2010...

PS: oh oops, just one more thing. Is it "ok" to use the loco's and stuff that comes with Trainz or do most people prefer payware/third party? I know in the flightsim world it's very uncool to use the default planes

For your own personal use, use whatever you want to. To begin with it's probably simplest to use the built-in assets. For anything you want to release to other users, it's up to you to decide what your acceptable standards are, but make sure people can obtain any non-built-in assets you use, either from DLS, your own web site, or some other third-party web site. You'll also need to decide whether to include payware or not, and whether to make your own offerings payware or not.
