I want to play with trams!

I've just been looking at the superb screenshots from Paulzmay, they are quite awesome!

I have my layout mapped out but, how to handle mixed traffic? Cars and trams do share the some roadspace at times but I can't find what (I think) I need.

Are there any roads visible or invisible which allow one way traffic? I can only find two way, I want the trams at times to occupy the centre section, other traffic either side. Invisible overlaid doesn't work unless you're happy with trams and cars driving through each other.

Are there any lights which can control car / tram interfaces? Which is best, bare track & textures or pre-ballasted (cobbled) track?

So many questions, so little time before summer and gardening, house painting etc, puts an end to my endeavours for this year!

Bewildered but working on it!

Take a look at Andi's street kit: http://www.ajsmith.nildram.co.uk/trs/street01.shtml

To create one-way traffic, you need to exploit the left hand rule - that is to say that as traffic always (on roads where cars drive on the left) takes the left hand fork of a road junction, you can force the cars to drive around one-way streets by manipulating the roads.

Andi06 has also made some track with catenary built-in, as has motorman1066. All of Andi06's gear looks best sunk between 30 and 40 cm.

Can I also take this opportunity to plug the new trams I plan, as reskins of Silversmith's. ;)

I belive on trainz.pl, there's also a set of roads that allow the cars to stop, pause, and turn at intersections. I used to have these installed on my computer, but I've forgotten which one. I do distinctly remember that they were unlike anything I had ever witnessed in Trainz, andi's wonderful kits included.

While waiting get the trams sorted out you could run motorman1066's trolley bus. The overhead wires can be laid as single track both sides of the centre running road traffic. The trolley bus overhead wires are at the same height as the common tram overhead so you can run trams and trolley buses on the same layout. There is a English trolley bus being built.

I might be able to help here... ;)

As Bidmod said, the first essential is Andi06's street kit and tram kit...

Then it depends what types of trams you are interested in. All of the Australian and British trams available use the higher 6.4m catenary. This is higher than most to accomodate double deckers. The majority of Continental European trams use a height of about 5.3m. My Westhaven Trams route (on the DLS) uses the former, and my new Bridgehampton Metro route (WIP) uses the latter. What items you need depends on which trams you want to run.

The left turn rule for traffic (in fact they turn left for right hand drive regions too  ) is very useful in separating carraigeways, and creating a space for trams in the middle. Careful use of the angled traffic lights (especially the single track one) allow you to cross in and out of the centre whilst stopping the traffic. If you set this up right you can have trams and cars on the same road with very few "collisions". These are a few examples taken from Westhaven Trams:

Hope this helps...

Please ask any more specific questions in this thread - I'd be happy to help...

Thankyou guys for prompt and useful responses, Trainz is one hell of a community. I've downloaded lots of stuff including help & instruction files so now it's back to the drawing board and learning curve.

When I grow up I hope I can produce layouts like the ones on the forums and DLS.... Better hurry up though, I could have had a bus pass years ago!

Hi Guys!

I'm starting to build a mini tram route of sorts in a route I'm working on and I'm trying to use Andi06's amazing streetkit. The problem is, I want to model the route in North America and as you know, we drive on the right side of the road. I read Andi's tutorial, but I'm a bit confused on how to set up multi lane one way roads (North American style) so that I can get the cars to stick to the right properly. Would any of you kind souls be so kind as to show me a picture or two demonstrating the way I should go about it? I've stared at the photo in the tutorial countless times trying to figure it out...:'(

To get the cars on the right side I start by diverging the roads. then cross them so they are fooled, starting to go left, then moving to the right.
I don't know how that translates to the Street kit, but that's the theory.
in practice, that means laying the first circles after the split almost, but not quite, on top of each other.

 Claude

Ugh, I am still confused! :'( Why would you cross the roads after you made the junction? If you just made a super short stretch going off to the side, the cars would have no time to go anywhere and elimnate the traffic you don't want correct?

I'll play around with this and see if I can grasp it but I'm still confused. :'( I'll post some pictures if I continue to get stuck.

I just wish there was a layout that incorporated this so I could actually look at it and see for myself how it works...

You cross the roads after the junction because TRS traffic ALWAYS turns left at a split, irrespective of the side the cars drive on. If a diverging road goes slightly left, then right, then the traffic will appear to turn right.

Perhaps I am confused by the wording and context. Do you mean to cross the roads if someone wants a circular loop? I think I understand the concept (not counting the last picture in Andi's tutorial) and I took a picture. Why wont this work?

I know that I would have to move the diverges near the end closer to minimze the cars that appear and sometimes the cars crossing it do a "funky dance of sorts" :hehe: but why wont that work? Why do you guys cross it?

Gisa ^^
p.s. for what it's worth, I feel fairly stupid for not seeing something that's most likely very obvious :o

I know of some people who bought Modula City and unlocked the content. The route's a very fancy tram route, with working traffic lights and all.
