I am about to install T2009...

....and I am planning to upgrade it straight to SP3 without starting the system along the way.

Has anyone done that? Are there any pitfalls?

Are there any problems migrating content from TRS2004 SP4 into TS2009 SP3?

I bought TRS2006 and installed it but quickly backed to TRS2004 after encountering CMP. Is the CMP version in TS2009 more user friendly?

I am on build 2365 and plan to go to build 41844. What has Auran actually accomplished with all the 39478 builds in between?? It is not unreasonable to expect a lot....

Any info is greatly appreciated!

I can help with part of your question.
I have installed 09 and 10 and updates straight thru with out stopping. Took quit awhile, but I have had no problems.
Just make sure you follow the standard procedures for game and update installation. I also downloaded and installed all updates manually.

Thanks! That is what I intend to do.

I will also advise to make sure your DirectX is up to date, to avoid a patcher failure when installing SP3.

Thanks! DirectX is up to date.

Being an old mainframe systems specialist I make it a point to always have the lastest software versions installed.

With that background I still find it hard to regard PCs and their software as nothing but unreliable toys....

By update DirectX, I think he means DirectX 9.0(C). The patch to Sp3 will abort without it.

I think I am on 9.0, I try to have the latest versions installed of any software I have, but I'll have to check that. Thanks!

I think I'll stay with TRS2004 SP4...

"Unable to determine installation location. Aborted patching at user's request." is the message I get when trying to install TS2009 SP1.....

The TS2009 base installation completed without errors.

Did you install Trainz in a different location ( or drive ) then suggested?
It is saying it needs to be shown where your Trainz install is before it will proceed.

No, I installed it into the default location.

After encountering the problem, I decided to start the TS2009. After entering the product key, a program called Auran Patcher started. It downloaded a patch, no details given but it seemed to be a big one. The program is running as I write this. God and Auran are the only ones knowing what the program is doing..... Or maybe it's just Auran knowing... I Hope.... We'll see, I'll let it run.

EDIT: The patcher program has completed. It turns out that it updated TS2009 into build 40040, i.e. to SP2, without errors.

EDIT2: When I started TS2009 after the patchng, I got a message that a patch is available, would I like to install it. I replied Yes and now the Auran Patcher is running again. We'll see what it does this time....

EDIT3: My TS2009 is now on build 41844 = SP3 without errors! I am impressed!! But the information along the way was really miserable!! Really user unfriendly, to say the least!

EDIT4: The patcher program also did a load of assets. This resultet in a long list of messagers looking like this:
; <kuid:414773:1016> : Asset <kuid:414773:1016> does not match the asset database record
a message that must be regarded as anything but user friendly. What does the message tell med?? Nothing, IMHO!

Re: EDIT 4: That is just TRAINZ way of informing you that an EDR (Extended Database Repair) was performed as part of the patching process and that it found (and repaired) some asset errors. Just routine stuff.

On a fresh installation without any asssets being added by the user? That means that the patcher program installs faulty assets, doesn't it? And how good is that?

Not necessarily. That message is vague but could also mean that the database index may not accurately point to the record. And lots of other things.

Trainz is a database-oriented program, nothing more, nothing less. You'll find it has all the benefits and problems any other has.

I am not interested in what a message might mean, I want to know exactly what a message means! No guessing!

Getting vague messages from a "virgin" installation does not appeal to me in any way, it signals problems.

I am seriously thinking of scraping my TS2009 installation and staying with TRS2004 SP4. I am not impressed with the TS2009 installation in any way, it gives me bad vibrations.

In fact, I want all system messages to be self-explanatory.
