How to insert maps into surveyor?

Ugh, I've been defeated by the search feature on the forums ..

I know this can be done I remember someone asking about it - how can I insert Google earth images into surveyor as texture so that I can lay track on it?

This my friend is an absolute pain unless you are using TranzDEM, a payware program that takes DEM's (essentially 3D models of a section of the worlds terrain) and inserts them into Trainz, it can also do WMS and can put Google Earth images on the baseboards.

It's not a pain in any shape or form :)

All you need to do is download the '1km Basemap' set from the Download Station. I think there's 9 in total labelled A,B,C etc.

From Google Earth, zoom into the area in question so your 1Km above the ground and save the image in the best resolution possible. Once saved you need to re-size the image to 1024x1024 pixels in a graphics/photo editing package. Although for better quality from within surveyor use 2048x2048 pixels.

Once the image is resized all you need to do is replace the '1km Basemap x.jpg' file that can be found in the pack directory (x= A,B,C etc). When this has been done you can then place the map into surveyor using the Scenery Tab.

Hope this helps.

For TranzDEM you should ask geophil about it as he is the one who made the program, I think its well worth it if you are doing a lot of real world layouts.

This doesn't actually replace the texture. It's an object that can be placed on a baseboard to show where textures and objects go, then you use it as a guide to do the texturing. It's very good for that. I use it myself.
