How do I get started with GMAX?

I gotta learn how to make vehicles or I will go bonkers. I googled gmax and don't know exactly what I'm looking for. Can you get it free for real from a safe site, or do I need to go buy it somewhere?

The classic is the Brick box tutorial in Gary's Trainz Pages: http://www.worldoftrainz-downloads.com/~garyp/gmaxtutorials.htm
I was never able to get the Brick Box to work, but I had a lot of luck with the others on the page. He has some links for other tutorials you might be interested in. Ianz Trainz even has a tutorial on how to make vehicles. http://www.ianztrainz.com.au/tutorial4.htm
Vehicles come in two types: Scenery items, which are basically textured boxes, and drivable, which ar more like road going locomotives.
For the second type, once you've accomplished your dreams of making vehicle shaped boxes, try Gerard's Trainz Tutorials http://publish.uwo.ca/~gerard/trainz/tutorials/
There's a simple loco tutorial that will get you started on drivable vehicles. After that, you can try World of Trainz. http://www.worldoftrainz.com/Pages/Tutorials.htm#TRS2004
There are tutorials here to get you up to speed on anything drivable or towable.
Finally, all creation should be done in the Trainz Asset Creation Studio. You can do it without the Studio, but it's a problem converting everything into Trainz format and setting up files. TACS does all of that for you. http://www.fileplanet.com/85772/80000/fileinfo/Trainz-Asset-Creation-Studio

If any of those tutorials already mentioned fry your brain, I can recommend Jytte Christrup's tutorials. They were the ones that broke the ice for me, especially the first one about how to make a simple house.

To quote from her web site;

"We are all dummies, when we first start out on a new venture. There is an awful lot to learn to be able to create assets for Trainz. There are also a lot of wonderful tutorials out there (see my links-page), but not always a step-by-step guide that will help a total newbie, who finds it hard to get started. When I did not find one for my project, I set out to make one (once I learned how to do what I needed to do). "

Thanks so much, you folks are very helpful. I'm in no big rush since I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I couldn't upload or even use anything thats not as good as what is already available. I'm very excited though and hope to be able to create 30's to 50's vehicles.

Do what I do: make stuff you can't find on the DLS. No matter how bad it is, it's the best (of it's kind) on the DLS.:D I'm making a sailboat. Not a good one, but useable, and the best (of it's kind) on the DLS. Guaranteed.

Hi Dinorius Redundicus,
I have downloaded the tutorials from Jytte's site (and had a good laugh at her other site of control tower jokes).
I have done the tutorials, in possibly the easiest and pain free way, and am surprised at the result. AMAZING. I have printed out her tips and advice at the end and will incorporate them when I build my own buildings.
take care
Don W
P.S. Thanks for the info.
