HELP WITH CURVES

When I first started using TC my curves were just that, nice sweeping curves. Now all my curves are short notchy sections of straight track forming the curve. I have tried using different types of track but it doesn't make any difference. It's hardly prototypical and is somewhat annoying. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or have I inadvertently changed a setting somewhere I don't know about. Advanced tab allows me to smooth height but I can't find anything that might let me smooth a curve. Can someone help steer me in the right direction.

Does this happen if you lay track on a new board? There is a tag in the config.txt 'Bendy 1' which controls how a track bends, check that this exists and is set to 1. As far as I know there is no global setting that will alter the way the track performs.

What track have you tried?

Peter

Thanks for the reply, it happens on new and existing boards. I don't know how to get to the config file though, any thoughts? I have tried all the track that comes with TC plus a couple that I got from the download station. The track itself works fine, just wont give smooth curves.

If you have sufficient space, make a second installation of TC3 in another folder, check that and if it works move your content across, it seems as though you may have a corrupted installation.

Trainz can live with multiple installations.

Hi,

There is a setting in Trainz regarding Spline Editing or something that might be the culprit here.
I remember it from years ago, it would on the lower part of the scale do something with the way splines looks and behave in Surveyor at least.
Maybe this is what happen?

Sorry, don't have Trainz handy to check the correct wordings, but hopefully this helps a little?

That is 'Spline Editing Detail' in Surveyor-Options, it shows or hides the spline circles according to the menu chosen, not to be confused with Spline Point Rotation which is another Surveyor-Options choice.

I don't think either apply in this case.

Do your tracks look like this: ---> http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc339/cascaderailroad/Screen_004-8.jpg <---

If so, you are using track that has a repeat rate of greater than 2m (looks more like 4m-8m track, which kink in tight curves).

Also, high detailed high poly track, has a 4m-8m repeat rate, and it kinks.

Chunky tracks (MP Wood v2, MP Rusty, MP Concrete, MP Tunneltrack Dark) are more bendy, and usually have a 2m repeat rate, and do not kink.

Some of the most undetailed, lackluster tracks are MB Tracks, Andi06, and Built In-Auran tracks. They do not kink, but look truely yuck, one dimensionaly, flat.

TRS tracks kink. As do VMD, WRRW, MRT, and a whole slew of other high detailed tracks, they kink terribly. I just hate when track creators make tracks that are not a 1m-2m repeat rate. ---> http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc339/cascaderailroad/Turnout4mRepeat.jpg <---

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions, unfortunately the problem is just not going away. I have reloaded TC 3 times (destroying hours of work in the process) all to no avail. I have only ever used the track that comes with TC and it just keeps doing the same thing, the last time being so bad the a train actually derailed. It was fine when I first got the game but now it's all but hopeless and I'm becoming increasingly disillusioned with the whole thing. I have tried everything suggested to me so far and nothing seems to work. I have made a simple circle track with every track that comes with TC with the exception of the invisible track and none of them will bend properly. I don't know what else to do.

Laying track: a straight joins to a curve, a curve joins to a straght...an S curve has a straight connecting the two opposing curves. A straight is always on each end of a curve and switch. There is a "Straightening" tool that works on all splines. If a track is not clicked together, derailments will occur.

If all else fails, click it with the straighten track tool and see what it does.
Is there a default setting that straightens all the track as you lay it?

It's just a thought but do you have lots of errors showing for tracks? I assume TC3 has cmp. If so, It may be a installation prob. Helpdesk may be your only answer. Or someone from auran may read this thread.

Hi kajatar

There's a very remote possibility that you have a gummed up shift key on your keyboard. Using shift when laying track will prevent the joins from bonding.

You could test this. Use the mouse only.

Lay a single length of track.

Place a spline point in the middle.

Pull the middle spline point to one side.

If you get your nice curve you probably have a sticky key.

Long shot - but maybe worth a try.

Cheers

While I appreciate all the help and suggestions I got from everyone it seems that no one thought to suggest that I simply make the curved track sections smaller. It seems that you can make a straight section of track 100 miles long but when it comes to curves, shorter is better, at least on my computer anyway. Since going back to making short curved sections my curves are now nice and smooth again. I don't know why it should make any difference but it does and I am once again a happy camper.

Radius Guide & Using FT Track spline point circles as a tracklaying guide

I use FT 15 degree 250m Radius track and MB Quad Line as a temporary tool, which I later replace with the track of my choice

Try using Chunky Mesh tracks (like MP Wood v2) that have a finer repeat rate of 2m, or less.

WRRW TK2A track drives me absolutely wild, with its 4m straight sections, and kinks.
