Trainz Bum for now
Hi,

Please HELP!!
I have been currently working on a route that is very close to release. I started trainz (TRS2006) and worked on it for a few hours and when I came back to my desktop, an error saying I only have 19MB of free disk space left on my drive C. I am unable to do a system restore, due to the fact that I need 200MB of space for that to run. I have uninstalled, FRAPS,TRAINZMAP, QUICKTIME, and a few other obsolite programs I seldom use and was able to free 100MB with those uninstalled from my computer. So then I fired up Trainz and guess what, I came back to the desktop (only after about 15 mins worth of playing) and now I only have 13MB free on my Drive C. WHAT IS WORNG!?

Thanks for any help
Mike S.

PS-I havent done much downloading (only about 11MB) and in control panel, it shows Trainz is taking (using) 4,210MB WOW!!! I am completey baffled

LOST EVEN MORE!!

Just for Info-
I just got done DLing something that was 23 Kb and now I'm down to 8MB free on my drive C. How can I download somthing so small and use so much space on my comp, Control Panel shows Trainz using over 5,000MB!! PLEASE HELP
I have trainz build 2.6(3337) and it runs fine.

Regards
Mike S.

That amount of hard disk space usage is normal for TRS2006 even with only a few additional assets installed.

Obviously you urgently need to do something to gain more space.

There are numerous hints regarding getting more hard disk space in various ways here.

Just checked my Auran area and I have 8.3 Gig or in your terms 8,300 MB. I lost my computer just before christmas and have only grabbed a few routes so far. Trainz needs lots of space to grow. If you have an FCT then you can drown your hard drive in a short time.

In other words you aren't using much space for Trainz.

First of all don't panic! Go to your Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup and run it to clear your hard drive of all cached and temporary data. Then, go to Settings, Control Panel, Add or Remove Program Files and determine which programs you do not need, like games, and uninstall them. Next, determine what programs or files you not need nor even looked at in the past 6 months and either uninstall them or burn them to a CD or DVD for storage, then delete the originals. After that, perform a FULL Disk Defragment on your hard drive to optimize it's performance.
I could have suggested getting a bigger drive or external HD, but you would eventually fill those up and have the same problem. :)

So, you suggest reconfiguring your entire system and adding several more drives just for one game? I hope Auran sends him a check for the added hardware.

Actually that isn't a bad idea. My C drive that has XP installed 37.5 Gb uses 11 Gb. My G drive that has Trainz is 195 Gb and uses 18 Gb. Once a harddrive is more than half full performace drops. Hard drives are cheap. The time spent enjoying Trainz is not.:hehe:

Bad Situation!!

Hi all,
Thanks for the helpfull tips. I tried most of the suggestions posted here, but still no avail. I am now running on 1GB free. Nothing runs. I'm beginning to think my computer got fried. I Deleted 98% of everything including trainz-( :'( ) and did not aquire any new free space. I also did a compleat reinstall of my XP and that didnt help, either.

Thanks for all the help, if there is anything more I should try, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards:wave:

Mike,

I guess this is a stupid question, but here goes...

you did empty the recycle bin?

If you use the disk tools (scandisk, defragment) - did they report "bad clusters"? - if the system decides that a cluster is bad, it will remove it from use. It may be that your hard drive is slowly failing...

Replacement is usually quick, easy and not that expensive - especially if you can get in before you lose all your data (i.e. have both connected at one time so you can drag & drop)

The only other possibilitiy I can think of is a virs/trojan/worm that blocks off the drive sectors.

HTH

Colin
