Grey/gray Dirt?

I have seen several rail-yards with a grey dirt from either coal or fuel spillage. On a cold rainy day they look miserable. For me a pristine rail-yard seems artificial. Does anyone know of a gray ground texture? It has to be around 1mb in size to offer good TS12 resolution.

Dude, there has to be thousands of textures out there, most of them on the DLS. Take a look and grab a few hundred that look to your taste, then do a bit of mix n match to blend the right kind of finish to your ground. It helps a lot if you start with the right kind of track/ballast and try to find colors that match with the muck on them to hide any seams between board and ballast edge. It's hard to get the mixes right at first but as soon as you crack it your yard will look like a photo of the real thing.

I have been through the DLS with dirt, mud, grey and gray. The ones that are a good dirty grey color are old lo-res things. Since I use TS12 they are a step backward. I'ii keep hunting. Maybe I can modify a grey rock hi-res texture.
Thanks

You can put several different textures together in a yard and keep using the change direction key "[" to change the direction and occasionally change the scale and radius. Then you can get a more realistic dirt color.

These any use? if so I will upload them earlier than I was intending.

Shot is of 3 different shades of dirt blended, made to TS12 specs.

Another thing to do is use the raise ground tool at its lowest radius and raise the ground a little between the tracks where there is space (dont raise the tracks). This gives it a 3d look.

I’m with jswager111 and Deano5 on this one.

Old lo-res they might be, but there are plenty of fine textures which can be blended, rotated and resized to give quite good results.

I’ve just tried a few in this odd corner. They are a bit overstated as an example. They don’t all need to be grey to produce a fairly convincing representation of a mucky old yard. Quick dabs of grass tufts and plashes can work quite well together over the top of a base of matching ballast. I’ve used a bit of ‘parking lot asphalt’ as well, just to darken some bits here and there.

Mixing will give you completely unique dirt. Laying a single bespoke texture will not.

It's actually 3 different textures used in the screenshot and blended, much as mezzoprezzo was recommending, although they work ok on their own as well.

Have uploaded to the DLS as CL dirt 03, 04, 05 and added 06 which is darker grey.

Dick,

You might want to check out the old textures by mylnikovdm.

These are up on the DLS and start with Kuid:131275:xxxxx. These are different colored ballast and gravel textures. They're great for tracks, cinders, even quarries because of the color and scaling.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Malc for uploading your "mix".

Thanks

Unfortunately, I am addicted to high resolution textures. One of the many reasons to not use "the other program".

The CL DIRT textures are ideal and allow for varying degrees of years of leaks and spills of things. The USA Environmental Protection Agency would have nightmares from them. The greener dirt is an excellent texture alongside roads where applications of salt (snow melting) during the winter makes vegetation a challenge. And finally, the textures are high resolution which is befitting for TS2012.
