Hello all
Ok, I just bought TRS2009 and am eagerly awaiting it to finish downloading from Steam.
Tell me, what are the differences between Trainz and RailWorks ???
I know that may possibly be a very BIG question, but Id like to know why so many people seem to prefer Trainz to Rail Simulator.

I only tolerate being called a "peep" around Easter....:hehe:

I don't have Rail Simulator, but my understanding is Trainz is easier to make routes with, and has more content available.

Yeah I have RailSim and have found myself almost thinking there must be a degree you can study for 5 years to get to grips with the editor. What a pain in the @@@ it is.
My understanding is that RailSim and indeed RailWorks, although boasting superior graphics, has very little content, and additionally, is generally a driving sim and does not have all the interactive stuff that Trainz has.
Well, if the editor is much easier to use, I will be a happy man.
I have asked this already, but will ask again. What is the terrain mesh level in Trainz ?

Trainz is so easy to create routes, give it a try....

What do you mean by Terrain Mesh Level ??

Basically in TS2009 the grid (and hence the underlying mesh) is comprised of 5 m squares (previous versions was 10M)

On that mesh you create the hills/valleys and apply textures and track. Then comes the exiting bit, adding in the details of textures, trees, buildings etc.

Open up an existing route in TS2009 and see whats there

BTW check out my QJ from your part of the world.

As with what Barn said, the baseboards are set to 0 Degrees which can be changed. When you lay them they are 5M but can be changed to 10M. I would just not recommend putting in Cooridnates for a very high mountain railroad, as Trainz has a Ceiling "Height" limit.

Take care and happy Tainzin,

Ryan:wave:

Head over to the TS2009 HOG & DEM Importing maps thred, all the info you need is there

Also search for TransDEM and MicroDEM in the SEARCH box above

If that's true, then why did ours work correctly? the baseboards are at 0 feet (sea level) and the highest point is over 7000 feet which is considerably higher than your +3000 feet.

Look, Bill, I don't know, and frankly, I don't care. I was just pointing out what was discussed recently in a different thread. I believe "Windwalker" was quoting the elevations. I'll look for the thread at my leisure and post the link. I don't care because the elevations aren't important to me.

Okay; it's 3000 meters, not 3000 feet. Here's the thread:

I care about meters like Paris Hilton cares about STD's!

Welcome aboard!

The main difference between Trainz and RailSimulator (Railworks) is flexibility and performance.
Trainz has a great surveyor tool that allows you to create an endless world of Rails and more.
Though RailSim does have a similar tool, it is not as flexible as Trainz.
Trainz is far more established thus providing more "third party" downloads and such. Trainz has been around for more than five years giving it some "seniority" in the world have train simulations.
Trainz also has the "Download Station" which hosts thousands of downloads made by people just like you!
It truly is a great hobby, one that I myself have made a commitment to.
And what about this forum?
It is full of great, helpful people who are not only here to help with problems with our game, but to have a good time and discuss the rail industry too.

And remember if you ever need help with your game, please don't hesitate to Private Message me!

Cheers and Welcome to Trainz,
Woody:cool:
