G'day Angela,

'Young" Zec, if I recall correctly uses 3DS Max 2008 but I use both 3DS Max 9 and 3Ds Max 2009 and there are 'official' exporters available for ALL versions of 3DS Max UP TO AND INCLUDING 3ds Max 2010 (which version MAY work with 3DS Max 2011 - but don't quote me on that). "Officially", Beyond 3DS Max 2010, you will be unable to export directly into Trainz and this situation is "for the foreseeable;e future". Who told you you could not get exporters for 3DS MAx for trainz??? It would not have been anyone, here, surely?..

Hi Zec,
Very nice.
I am assuming you are using 3DSMax? If so, what do you use to get the files into Trainz please? I am thinking of upgrading from Gmax but it is said oh so often on the forum that it is not possible to Export into Trainz.

Angela

3Ds Max exporters for Trainz. http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php5/Downloads I think that's all the Max versions from Max4 through Max 2012. There is one for blender also but I'm not sure were it's at. If I remember correctly Sketchup don't have one but someone found a work around.

I'm using 3ds Max 2012 with the exporter that Slave-Driver mentioned. I think there is a lot of FUD going on right now about gMax and its possible future demise. I didn't get to see the thread that has gotten everyone up in arms, but I find it hard to believe that TS2013 or TS2014 or whatever will not be able to use any prior assets (there would be absolutely NO asset base of content, and who would want to use it), so as long as gMax is able to make content for TS12, anything made with it will be useable for a good time to come yet.

With that said, if you are wanting to upgrade for the sake of using 3ds Max, sure, the exporters are there!

if you or anyone else thinks that was what the conversation was about (and i am not saying you do), then you have REALLY missed the point.

the subject was about using old outdated software with such an unstable base and no possibility for update. it wasnt so much about its future demise, but how it was already met it's demise (it would be naive to deny this, it is no longer supported or developed in any form and is 10 years old) and is already out of date and already unable to cope with making some of the modern advanced .im models - that isn't to say that it cannot be done, but it requires an external process. anything produced by gmax and the old exporter are already out of date .im formats, the more trainz development progresses the worse this will become, it has nothing to do with whether or not the models 'work' in game.

Still a lot left to do, but I think it is coming along.

Wow MSP! That looks awesome! If that still has lots left to be done, I can't wait to see what it looks like finished.

G'day Jerker,
I just felt the general concensus of opinion being bandied about on the forum regarding Gmax being 'out of date and not supported' meant I should seriously think about moving on from it. Nobody has speciffically stated it is redundant and again a general feeling of 3DSMax not being able to Export gave me that opinion, even though I know folk use it so assumed there must be a way. Gmax has the umbrella of TACS but I do not think this applies to 3DSMax - does it?
Again I have had a few problems with it lately on the more complicated assets such as the footbridge at Staines (old one) and a destroyer I am currently working on. As the build progresses Gmax begins to jerk about all over the place, try to move an object carefull a small amount and it leaps a full grid, very annoying. I found a workaround by dividing the model into segments and using 'save selected' so I have chunks of the model saved out and then closing Gmax, starting it up again with a new file/board/grid whatever you like to call the screen and Merging each chunk seems to get me out of that rut and allows me free movement again for a fair while but it does happen again eventually, the destroyer is on the third revamp at present I think (lost count!) and to me it isn't that complicated. The same thing happened to the Upminster train shed I made for Snakelight and I now think it happens with long models because the grid goes into a parallax mode, wide near the front but getting narrower farther back.
However, I am happy with Gmax now I have discovered how to 'cure' the problem. But looking at 3DSMax renders I feel they are far better than Gmax produces, the mirror effect and glossiness for starters are improvements. But 3DSMax is expensive and I would only use it here at home for making assets for Trainz for as long as my eyes hold out so am wondering if it might be worth it for me.

And as for 'young Zec', anybody under the age of 70 is young to me... ha ha.

Thanks for all your comments on this matter.

Bless you all,

Angela

There are Max exporters up to and including Max 2012, updated end of 2011 if I remember correctly. from the download page
contains TS12 plugins for Max 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 2008 32-bit, 2008 64-bit, 2009 32-bit, 2009 64-bit, 2010 32-bit, 2010 64-bit, 2011 32-bit, 2011 64-bit, 2012 32-bit, and 2012 64-bit. (Current build dated 111019.)
what there isn't and according to N3V there are no plans for, is an exporter for Max 2013.

Naw, I'm a Valley Boy (Manteca). You Coasties will remember us as the folks who came to the game smelling like cow manure... (sorry, old rivalry joke).

Never thought someone would recognize that pic, of all things. It's just a backdrop image I found to use to create some 'pop' through the windows, rather than just a stock environment color.

Work continues....

Nope, Im a valley boy too. I'm over in Tracy though, so there is a distinct trace amount of burnt rubber in our manure smell :p

Only reason I know the area is because we frequent the Big Basin and boardwalk areas alot for vacation and hikes,
and just general knowledge of the SC&BT line...

cheers

They would melt ice or snow that could possibly block the turnout from changing positions. (if the turnout is stuck midway, then you could have a derailment)
