Gear Driven Steam Locomotives

I've just played the sound and it sounds fine, try going edit, edit in explorer and see if thats any different. Also, not having a working headlamp is common, thats what i find

I'm not having a lot of luck. I downloaded the heisler from DLS and there are eight dependencies and seven (88346:50004 thru 54012) of them have question marks. I then downloaded it from "Trainzone". There a 6 total dependencies and three of them are faulty. I realize I'm not a lot of help, but I can follow instructions pretty well.
Thank you all.
Joe

edit in explorer was the first thing that I tried to get the sound working. Tried it both in 09 & 10, moves along nicely but silently. I had it working (sound and all) in 2006 but lost it when I removed 06 from my computer. I do have a working SHAY which is my favorite geared locomotive. Thank you for your efforts.

Narrowgauge is right, i've just downloaded it and it works great. i ran it in driver and all sounds are great. If you do download this one Joe, remember to commit the loco by narrow gauge as it will not work inless its commited.

Edit: sorry, that was Heisler

I'VE GOT THE HEISLER!! It is great, everything works just fine. You folks amaze me, I have no idea what you do to get these engines to regain function. But I'm going to try to learn.
I am going to clone the "Climax" and see if I can make the engine sound work. I don't have a clue where to start however.
Thanks again, I'll be in touch if it is okay with you.

Hi, Just a thought, you could change the climax sounds for the heister one's, that is, if you like the heister engine sound

If you do want to work on the Climax sound, remember that the steam beats and not 4 times per wheel revolution. If my memory is correct the gear ratio which determines the steam unit speed is 2.7 to 1.

Hi, Just a nother thought, on google search "audacity". This is a free editing software for sounds. i haven't tryed it so i can't tell you what to expect but if your intrested...

Down loaded the Heisler and it works perfectly including sound. Exchanged engine sound in the Climax to the Heisler and the sound level is barely audible. I also have a standard 4-6-2 with weak sound. Any idea what could cause that and a possibly a recommended solution. Opps! Just saw the above post. I suppose it is worth a try.

Thanks, tomurban

Did you change the engine file as well, that may have the stuff for how the sound sounds.

Yes I did change the engine specs because I assume that they function together. Thank you for the Audacity suggestion. It is a very intuitive program and user friendly. One of the many facets of a .WAV it allows you to change is the amplitude. I ran the original .WAV files through the program and found that most were at level 0 and the highest about level 3. Based on an educated guess, raised all the .WAV files to between level 8 and 10 and saved them them in the sound folder. The Climax now sounds great and Audacity saved the day. Thanks again.

I'm definitely in over my head. I have been pretty much lost beginning with the post by "narrowgauge" about the relationship between wheel revolutions and sound (I understand that it is required, but I have no idea how to set it up). I did try removing the steam sounds from the climax and replacing it with the heisler sound. Unfortunately it didn't work (not even muted) for me. Obviously I did something wrong. I went on line and looked up Audacity. Even the description of its capabilites is intimidating.
Is there a book of some sort (something like "Trainz For Idiots") that could help someone like myself understand some of this?

I doubt that you did anything wrong. To make the sound file change you need to replace the existing sound kuid with the new one in two places. One being the line "engine sound" in the engines config file and the second in the kuid table usually near the bottom portion of the config file. Give it another go. It also helps if you have a working knowledge of computer software, especially the operating system. I am on my 4th version of TRAINZ in 3 years. The learning process never ends, but I am enjoying the challenge.

I still have a failure. Working on a clone of the climax, I replaced both the enginespec and enginesound from the climax with the ones from the heisler. I then scrolled down to the kuid table and did the same. I saved the config file and committed it. When it showed up in the content list it had a yellow "missing dependencies" symbol. When I opened it the two new replacement kuids had question marks. Is my procedure not correct? Please advise.
Thank you
Joe

the only thing i can suggest is that when you are looking for the heisler sound and engine file, in content manager, you right click on the sound and engine file and click "view dependence assets" or something like that. if it says heisler its the right one, but if you cant click on "view dependence assets" its the wrong one. i think its saying that because there is an update and you've put the old one in.

I now have the heisler sound in the climax. It is working well and sounds great.
I made a new clone then made sure I the correct kuids from the heisler. I also found that there are two "Climax Steam Sound" files in the climax kuid table (44700:53003 and 44700:53093. In my clone, I eliminated the 44700:53093, and corrected the numbers. Thank you,
Joe

Glad that you got it sorted out. I have found that if you under take a little at a time it is easier to achieve your goals. If you need more help, just ask here or start a new thread.

yes, well done for getting it swapped. If i was you, i would just fiddle around with cloned locos and teach yourself, thats what i did, and knowing how to reskin is a handy thing to know.

thanks

Yes, always use clones and do not edit any built-in content.
