hey everyone,
Just got my new laptop and want to play train simulator games. Had MSTS in 2002 and it does not work in my new laptop. So there has to be something similar today. What are your recomendations, I want to run all types of trains ....passenger a must. I have some track laying programs, but are lookinf for more. Saw a kool demo of Acela leaving Penn station, showed train, track plan, station, very nice. MY computer is....HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook
product #......A3f83AV
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

thanks,

I've been playing various versions of Trainz for years. I've had a version of it (that I can not for the life of me remember the name of (Edit: Which I have just learnt is UTC)) which had some cracking old routes on it such as Banks Heath, Robe River and some Swiss one. Since then, Trainz has progressed, right now there is some beautiful, dynamic content out there. I would recommend Trainz 2010. I only have a laptop, and it runs it really quite well. However, you only have a Notebook so I'm not too sure. Perhaps Trainz 2006? :) just my opinion, I'm sure other people will have better ones :)

Hi and welcome to Trainz!

I am no expert on laptops, so I don't know what your specific laptop can handle. The average laptop has some problems with heavy graphics stuff.
Solely based on that argument, I would suggest to go for Trainz 2010, currently boxed on sail for $9,99. I am not sure if these are US$ or AU$.

If you are convinced that your laptop is not a "technically challenged" if it comes to heavier graphics, I would blindly go for the latest edition: TS12. I personally bought the digital download (2-3 hours of downloading), but that is all personal preference.

Whatever you do, don't go for anything older then 2009 as it is no longer supported.

Hope this helps a bit.

I would agree that TS2010 would be the best for starting - if your computer has the necessary specification, which you should check carefully online before buying anything. With each version published, the computer spec increased considerably! One important aspect would be the graphics capability. Why not publish your notebook's spec and see what advice you can get once people know exactly what you have?

Incidentally, I began some years ago with TRS2004 and a computer with 250MB integrated graphics - and you could certainly have a lot of fun with that version, which is still preferred by quite a lot of users. Some are still creating new assets for it.

I was joking when I said that. Get a Windows 7 computer with Nvide Drivers, and lots of ram. That way, the game will run smooth. I recommend Trainz 2010, as Trainz 2012 is very slow.

I have a HP Pavillion dv6 and run Trainz on it quite happily with no trouble. And my OS is Vista. And I'm running TS2010 on it mainly, so I'd recommend that to Zephead.

I ran Trainz for 6 hours straight once, half of that on the Settle & Carlisle line. Absolutely no overheating there.

In your HP dv7 notebook, can you see what your Processor, RAM and video card is? The laptop I normally run on has an i5 processor, 6Gb RAM and a decent video card (NVidia). TS12 runs great with some minor tweak to frame rates etc. If its a newer model, you should be fine with a newer product.

Hi Zephead. I have a Toshiba Satellite C660 runnwing a 1.5Ghz core, with 2Gbs Ram and built in graphics.

The only problem I have is running the ECML route, which is very big.

And remember the game can't use more then 3.5 Gbs of ram. (I thinks it that much).

Not if he can place something under the notebook, such as a cooling pad.

Or like me a piece of wood to lift the notebook up at the back so there's a small gap under it.

OK this guy needs ALL your advice:

Should he buy TS10 ... or should he buy TS12 ?

I explained to him that the NKP Berkshire is only for TS12, (with the SP1 patch applied)

Anyone have any input TS10 vs TS12 this guy is ready to go out and buy TS10 ... as well as TRS2006, and skip TS12 ?

Please advise him on which version to buy.
Starting new thread because last thread everybody wanted specific info on my laptop, here it is: HP Pavillion dv7 Notebook PC
Intel Core I7-3610QM
CPU @2.30GHZ
Memory 12 GB RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
Graphics- Intel HD Graphics 4000

With this computer set-up what kind of TRAINZ package can I play without worries.

Thanks everybody

I have informed this guy that after waiting 10-14 days, the disc may arrive in the US Mail ... then with antivirus temporarily turned of (and no PC usage allowed) you must NOT run Trainz, nor lay track) and wait for up to 3-4 more days, as you consecutively apply all the numerous patch's, overnight, when your PC is totally undisturbed ... His reply was: "Wait ... What am I getting myself into, Is this not like MSTS, where it is Plug & Play, and is up and running inside of a matter of minutes" ?

I really think that the digital download is not his cup of tea ... as it might fail, being that it also is a 12 hour (or more) process, with your antivirus turned off.

No ... It more like a complete heartbreaking chore, and is a full-time job ... instead of being an enjoyable plug & play, playstation game.

I suggested that he get TRS2006 Trainz Railwayz by Merscom ... as it already has TRS2006 SP1 installed ... and is Plug & Play ... Where as TS10, and TS12 are not Plug & Play !

But then again he will miss out an all the super deailed graphics of TS12

Are you kidding, I hope!

It's not that bad, and if he gets the current download it has all the patches in already.

Yes, installing the software without the A/V running is recommended, although not necessary as I and numerous other have found out.

Perhaps I don't see the dry sense of humor in this. :)

John

So, the TS12 digital download, is the SP1 is pre-installed, and you have no option to install without SP1 ?

And likewise, does the TS10 digital download come with the highest build pre-installed, and you have no option to install leaving out the two highest builds ?

It's not just a game ... it's a full time job ! (3-4 days to install and patch a video game, then the errors and fix's ...) I am NOT laughing !

It's no wonder I like TRS2006 so much !

I am trying to help this new comer into buying TS10, and especially T12

Nope. Good job too.

More like the 3 1/2 hours it took me I'd say.

You might be able to help him better if you actually had it yourself.

Paul

I considered upgrading to TS12, with SP1, so that I could run the NKP Berkshire DLC (that was the only attraction that made me go: "Oooh ... Oooh" I want to upgrade to TS12).

Maybe you people who do have TS12, could help him decide ?

If a new user were to ask me, I would suggest TS10 as well. More routes and compatibility mode. A lot of long time users forget how maddening all these errors can be when you don't even know what a CDP or dependency are. With TS10, you can at least run the program as you learn the rest. TRS2006, those minor errors, dependency hunts and that SP1 patch turned me off of Trainz until I stumbled on TRS2004 in a bargain bin for $5 almost a year later.*

Not everyone has the patience or love of the program to spend hours fixing errors.
