Feather River Canyon

Absolutely beautiful. I have driven the Feather River highway many times. You have really captured it. I'm envious.

Update 10/11

Well, work on the route is slowing to a crawl....literally. It seems I have overlooked the fact that my workstation is tired and the route keeps demanding more and more processing capacity because of the increasing details (or to the best of my knowledge is why things are slowly becoming more and more sluggish). Either way, I have managed to lay down another 5 miles of track west from Paxton siding, and about 2 miles east out of Keddie. Trees are roughed out and missing in several spots, but the bulk of the work on newly laid parts of the line, have been completed. As for Oroville, no progress has been made as I am still searching for a correct trackplan for the yards. So unfortunately, not much new to see, but here are a few shots of the progress east of Keddie and downgrade out of Paxton siding.

Update 10/23

I haven't had much time to work on the route (creating the route is slow still). However, I have gotten about 2 miles of canyon completed just east of Clio, CA. No shots at the moment, but I will do my best to upload a few later on in the week.

by the way is this layout going to be available in 2006. But anyways that route is THE BOMB DIGITY! Ive been drooling over the route for what seems to an hour :udrool::udrool::udrool::udrool::udrool::mop::mop::mop:.
sincerly,
MTW

she's a good route...i just wish there was a GS-2 in WP colors around (probably able to get it from Paulz Trainz, but with little finds around--IE college:hehe: :o--that's not really an option) or a couple elesco-browed 2-8-2s. If you're looking around, timothetoolman has some reskinned 2-8-2s and 4-8-2s as stand-ins you could run. they look good, if you ask me.

Update 11/22

Oroville yard is still under construction (still finding more and more info on the yard back in the day, meaning more and more alterations to what I had originally laid out). Besides that, not much progress has been made since winter and the holiday season have begun to come upon us.

@montanawestren: Unfortunately, the route is being constructed in TS2009 at the moment. I may need to get a new copy of Trainz down the road if I get a new workstation (TS2009 can barely run on my antique), which may mean transferring the route to a newer version to be completed in.

@sawyer811: Tim's models where one of the things that inspired the route. The F units are just wonderful. As for steam, it could be run on the route and still fit (the route is being modeled in the 50's / 60's) but no one has made a well detailed WP 2-8-0 or 2-8-2 (commonly found on the route and where the last types of locomotive to go I believe). I started converting a generic 2-8-0 into a WP one, but I am not a master at modifying in the 3D world (give it to me in the real world and it will be perfect). That project eventually was abandoned.

Please, if you would, complete it in TS2009 and then update it for 2010/12. I'm sure there are lots of people (myself included) who only have 2009 and would love to run this route. Why can't you transfer 2009 from the "antique" to the new computer once you get it?

Along the lines of WP reskins, if anl gets his UP Challenger out, we can reskin that for WP and have a blast. I understand they had some 4-6-6-4s. Don't know how many ran in the Feather River area (or how good a stand-in a UP 4-6-6-4 would be for a WP 4-6-6-4), but...

:)

Update 11/29

Well, after a few requests that the route be finished in TS2009 and a long weekend because of Turkey Day, I was able to get Trainz to run a bit faster than before, allowing me to do some work to the Feather River Route. I found some better looking trees with a simpler structure than the old trees on the route. With these, all the scenery blends better and everything is running faster as there is not as much to be processed.

The new speed I can work at is encouraging me to work on the route more often, but there is still the other things in life that take priority to this project, so completing the route is still far off on the horizon.

So, for the moment, here's a few more miles south of Paxton Siding.

Enjoy,
D.C.

I have to say this route has the potential to match dermmy's Clovis sub & socalwb's Moave sub I liking where your going with it your detailing is right on the mark, obvesously a route of this size you don't want to get to hell bent on lineside detailing other wise It will do your head in real fast lol,
Hope you keep trucking on this great project and I always look forward to your updates.
Happy surveying!!

Update 12/14 (BIG NEWS)

Not much has changed in the canyon in the past week, other than a few more miles of twisting track has been completed a couple miles west of Paxton (bringing the total trackage up to around 30 miles of rail). But that isn't the big news.

The first bit of news is that Project Western (PW) is still alive and growing. As STL has recently closed, many may think that PW has closed down with it. After talking with Tim, however, it's clear that the project is NOT in fact. Trainz PA has allowed Timothetoolman's PW equipment to be hosted again on the Trainz PA site and Tim and I are working to produce Project Western's own site. The site includes updates both on PW and The Feather River Canyon Route (FRR), links to Tim's beautifully re-skinned equipment, as well as a bit of information on who PW and FRR are and what are plans are for the future.

Also, for all those who are interested in FRR, you may soon be able to try it out for yourselves. I have decided that I will release a demo version of the route to help launch the PW home site. The demo will only be the section of the route around Keddie, with about 15 or so miles of track total. This means that one of the most famous railroad spots of the Feather River Canyon, Keddie Wye, will be included with the demo.

As of this moment, the PW site and the demo route are nearing completion and should be ready by January 2012 (if all goes well and no errors develop).

Keep an eye out for updates,
D.C.

Feather River

Hi All,

Just wanted to stick my nose in since I haven't been on in a while. The Route is 116 miles from Oroville to Portola. Even compressed as my route was it still took two hours to drive at 60mph. (I was doing this for timing and distance measurement) You can use Google maps to get an idea of terrain. I still have pictures from my project a few years ago. I also have a picture of the yard at Oroville before the roundhouse was torn down. You should pay attention to the details of the river itself and also there are sections of track where the river is not visible from track side. If you are having trouble with your computer bogging down from too much detail try only putting in what can be seen from the cab of a train.

I have been away from Trainz for health reasons and work. I have all of the versions from the beginning and just bought version 12. I also recently aquired a copy of 3Ds Max 2010 and am considering redoing my route with all the bridges and tunnels created from scratch and placed permanently along the route. This will be a long term project on my part and will be happy to help you if asked. The pictures look good so far. As was posted earlier, the terrain could use a little more artwork so it doesn't look so generic. Keep at it.

Update 12/28

FRR is still slowly making progress. The holidays have given me more time to work in Trainz. The demo version of the route is nearing completion and should be released soon after the new year with the website. Just a few more details have to be added and everything should be set.

As for the entire (non-demo) route; I have been working on expanding the line from the end of track outside of Portola, westward to the Clio, adding the high bridge (a famously photographed landmark) to the route. The bridge and track are in place, but scenery is still being added. Details are also being added (like in the demo) but I am not stressing to make the line extremely detailed since it would take forever as it is such a huge route.

That's all for now,
D.C.

Great route u've got going here, hope it gets completed in time, I love what you did lowering that truss bridge below the tracks

Great work, but your textures need to be a bit more varied. It looks bland.

@tycoonk4: I understand the route seems a bit "bland" texture wise. I am experimenting (the shot below being the most successful) in trying to get a more green look to match the prototype or at least the MSTS version of the route. So far, I have had next to no satisfying results (at least for my taste...but perhaps I should stop counting rivets).

@jjslll54: Nice shot! I haven't found an aerial shot (or decent track diagram for that matter) of the Oroville yard. This shot will help me greatly in the next few days as I once again (for about the seventh time) redo both the Portola and Oroville yards.

I love counting grass blades, but that doesn't mean you have to. You're supposed to enjoy making the route. :)

I will give some suggestions, though. Seems to me there were a lot more trees in the pictures around Keddie Wye that I've seen. To keep the framerates up, I'd use the built in forest textures to simulate trees in the distance, and then put a few more trees closer to the tracks. Others may disagree with this tack, but I use it and like it. Also, in all the pictures I've seen, the terrain was darker. Maybe some darker grass/dirt colors?

This is just what I'd do, not saying you should do it. Take this all as suggestions, not orders! :D Have a good time and make something you like. I will enjoy it, regardless - a train simulator just ain't gonna be perfect nohow. Again, have fun, and don't worry overmuch about it. Looking forward to the demo release!
