I also like most any of the metro rail systems, the CTA, Atlanta's, and D.C.'s ( I wish there were a couple of really good subways on Trainz....similar to World of Subways, which I have both)

....so it kinda gives me away as a Midwesterner who migrated to the South huh?

Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O)
Cass Scenic Railroad (CSRR)
Pere Marquette (PM)
Nickel Plate Road (NKP)
Baltimore & Ohio (B&O)
New York Central (NYC)
Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR)

All of the above pretty much in order, and all pretty much during the transition era. To me railroading lost much of its charm after the late 50's, just can't stand the look of the more modern diesel locomotives. The early streamliners, original U-boats and Geeps, yes, but after that - yuck! Steam, of course, trumps all, especially the massive superpower locomotives that the C&O was so famous for. Just love the look of the late C&O steamers.

CB&Q--->BN--->BNSF

Well since I grew up in a suburb of Chicago (Berwyn) the main line of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy ran through our town (3 tracks, with suburban rail service on the outer two and long distance passenger service (California Zephyr, etc) and freight on the middle track). Many days as a kid we rode our bikes to the railroad to watch the trains run through town, at grade so easy to see. Now of course the suburban service is operated by Chicago's METRA.

Now, many years later, I live in northern Idaho, and across the road from my house is the mainline of BNSF. Amtrak (2/day), freight (about 35/day), work trains, pickup trucks running the rails, even saw a short flatbed car with a porta-potty strapped to it. Starting to see coal going westbound (Wyoming to Asia). Last year I saw an executive train with the vintage silver passenger cars from the California Zephyr - rumor had it Warren Buffet was on board.

Visalia Electric Railroad

The Visalia Electric Railroad, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Southern Pacific Railroad, began as an electric interurban railroad in Tulare County, in the U.S. State of California.[1] The railroad was incorporated on April 22, 1904.[2] Passenger service was discontinued in 1924, and the electrification was removed in 1944. Subsequent operation was by diesel locomotive. The railroad was closed in 1992.
The Visalia Electric used the unusual choice of 15 Hz AC at 3,300 Volts carried by overhead wire, with pantographs on the cars for pickup. Parent Southern Pacific intended this as a testbed for main line, long distance electrification of its own lines in the area, a project that never came to fruition. At one time in its life the Visalia Electric briefly interchanged with the ATSF. The ATSF was seen by the Southern Pacific as a rival. So for most of the life of the Visalia Electric only interchanged with parent SP.
