It would appear that your PC cann't handle the program

It may be because of a faulty install (you did have the virus checked turned off?), or it may be a problem with the hardware drivers (e.g. video, audio, motherboard).

I can't remember if 2004 has the trainsdiag program with it (I think it does) - try using that, then post any problems + your PC configuation.
It may be necessary to disable the intro (in the trainzoptions.txt file) if you're using some graphics cards....

This problem is normally caused by installing 04 with any virus type program running.
You must uninstall and then reinstall 04 and the SP4 service pack making sure you have disabled or turned off any virus type programs you have.
Plus you may have to put this into your trainzoptions.txt file make sure you type it in exactly as shown including the -
-intro=disable

ok have done all that as above and still same problem. the annoying thing is , is thats its the same computer i always used to use when the game played fine. just haven't used it in a while and now will not work.cant seem to think what has changed really

Have you checked that your machine isn't overheating? This can cause errors as well.

The same thing with memory problems. Run Memtst86 or a similar program to test the hardware. I've seen memory fail, and cause Trainz to fail, but the machine is able to run everything else.

the machine does get a little warm as i live in Thailand, but everything else including other games such as ship simulator and diablo runs ok. i downloaded memtest86 iso and burnt it onto a CD but i am not sure how to re boot from a CD.

To reboot from a CD, then you need to access the BIOS. When you turn on the computer, it will normally display a screen like this: http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/StartupScreen.gif

At this stage, you need to keep pressing DELETE (maybe F2, but will be listed at the bottom of the screen) until a blue screen appears, like this:
http://images.planetamd64.com/pyr0/DFI_SLI-D/BIOS/Large/Main BIOS Screen.jpg

Then you need to go into advanced BIOS features, and where it says boot order, press enter. Then change the primary bootup device to CD-ROM, by pressing enter, and selecting CD-ROM on the list with the arrow keys. Make sure that Hard drive or HDD remains in the list somewhere.

Then exit the BIOS by pressing F10, and pressing enter at the prompt. The computer will restart. Place the CD-ROM in the drive, and restart the computer again. It should then boot from CD.

Illy I have the exact same problem, it used to run fine but whenever I try and launch it it gives me that fatal error message.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Did you try adding this line to the trainzoptions text doc
-intro=disable

yes , i have done all of the above, even memory tested the computer. i am having my computer upgraded at the moment and waiting for that to be done and try the game again. nothing so far has worked i am hoping new and larger memory will help. will advise when computer is upgrade to see if anything happens. have tried the direct x / open GL formats, doesn't make any difference , also removed all custom content and started afresh with a brand new install. but still wont go. sure is frustrating.

trainzoptions

Just do a search. That's what I did and entered the disable line. However, I am still having the same problem.

Your problem is almost identical to mine. Trainz worked and then stopped after about a year. I uninstalled it out of frustration. Now I had my PC repaired (faulth fan and power supply), reformatted the HD reinstalled trainz 2004, updated DX and alas I STILL GET THE BLOODY FATAL ERROR! Is there any hope out there?

yes i am also getting the same problem even on a different computer that has never had trainz on it?? how can this be. the CD cant be corrupted surely. maybe they built in a planned obsolescence program in TRS 2004:eek: [but i doubt it!!!?]
this really is ridiculous though , but i am glad its not just me with this constant fatal exception. the help desk are not interested as the game is too old for any support from auran.
am trying to buy the trs2006 collection but everywhere including auran seem not to have it.[out of stock] looks like trainz is off my games list now unfortunately.

updated DX and alas I STILL GET THE BLOODY FATAL ERROR

IF I remember correctly, (Big "IF") - Trainz uses DX9 - Vista comes with DX 10 - but this isn't completely back-compatible.

I understand that you need version 9 for Trainz (which can co-exixt with 10 if you happen to have Vista).

One day I'll dig out my old copy of TRS 2004 and re-install it - remembering to use the SP4 update (did you?)http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/default.htm

Cheers,

Colin
