Adam

Why, of course! I CDP everything and use a DVD RW, so I can delete and add at will. Just use as a file storage. For the same matter, you can use a flash memory (DVD is restricted to 4-5 Gb and flash could be up to 32 or 64 Gb).

If there is a lot of files, I would advise using the archive function in Content Manager, as it will also pick up the dependencies.

To do so:

1.Use the search box to find the assets you wish to copy to the new system.
2.Open the Archiver panel on the left-hand side (click the down arrow next to it to do so)
3. Drag the assets across from the search results list to the Archiver pane - click Accept when prompted (if there are any assets you do not want to include dependencies for, untick them)
4. When done, click Archive then select where you want to put the file and what to call it in the save box that appears (it will save as a .cmpa file) - this is the file to copy across.

On your new system:
1.Open Content Manager.
2. Go into Settings, then click Add.
3. Select the .cmpa file you copied from the old system, then click Open.
4. Click Close/OK i(could be either) in the settings box.
5. Content Manager should then detect the archive and offer to install the assets - click Yes.
6. If a Yes/No box does not appear, open the archiver panel on the new system, then click the down arrow where the word 'New Archive' appears, then select the name of your archive - it should then prompt. (If it does not, select all the assets in the list in the Archiver panel, then right click (in the archiver panel) and click Install - the process will then start.
7. Once this is done, you can remove the archive reference using the settings box (the files that are imported will remain intact during this, and the archive itself will also remain intact).

thanks, caan this be done through the content manager, or is there another way? (i have ts2009)

You can back up the "source CDPs" using a program called CDPSave.
Code:
[I]CDPSave[/I] is designed for TRS2006 and TS2009 users who want to save
a copy of files they have downloaded (i.e. files with the .CDP extension).
In earlier versions of Trainz management of these files was fairly easy,
but now the files are saved with meaningless names in the
TRS2006(TS2009)\cache\internet folder. CDPSave will rename the files
with a sensible name, and copy (or move) them to a specified location.
It will also optionally create HTML thumbnail pages of the saved .cdp files.
Other features are also included such as the ability to easily change the
Trainz options and keyboard shortcuts.
(Quote shamelessly copypasta'd from the Tafweb Homepage).
The program can rename the CDP files by KUID or Asset Name, or both. Personally, I recommend going with KUID only, as some assets have names which exceed the length limitations for Windows filenames.

Personally, as a TS2006 user, I prefer to take advantage of the game's inbuilt archiver. Many of my assets, both DLS and 3rd-party, come with errors. Once I've got the content working error-free, I use CMP to list only local, non built-in assets. Then I "select all" and drag the items into the "archiver" panel, let it search for dependencies, and hit the "archive button".

I rarely use CD/DVD for backups anymore. Flash drives (even just an 8gb) are the way to go, although I take the added precaution of storing copies of both my "source CDPs" and the CMP-generated archives on my local file server as well.

Sorry if any of what I explained confuses you.

[edit] Someone else explained the archiver while I was writing this post. Did a better job of it, too.

I use a flash drive to save downloads while at work (since that PC doesn't have CMP on it), but rarely waste time with locos, since they usually have a TON of dependencies. Those I do from this laptop, with CMP, which has actually been working well the last couple of months!).

DLS FTP speeds suck (while assets from third-party sites has speeds that are normal), which is why I do more of it at work, since it does so in the background and I don't care HOW long it takes).

Reccomend you don't use archive in content manager.

I did this with my `09 version, archiver created 5 files but would not load back any files over 2gb

here's my link to the thread.

I now use Syncback to back up my local folder every week onto flashdrive and backup HDD.

It may have been fixed in CM3.2, but I just don't risc it now.
448000 files - 31.7GB thats alot to loose.

So is the Local folder where all the downloaded assets (DLS, third-party or whatever) are located? I was going to ask this in another thread, because I was thinking of putting TRS06 on my desktop as well, but I would want to have all of the assets my laptop does, with the possibility of creating a layout well off my laptop's one with iPortals to connect them.
