File Extension Changes After Download Completion...........LITERALLY.

Imagination At Work
Okay, so, I know what you're thinking; HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE???

The answer to that question is, I don't know. Shortly after purchasing the new CP Hudsons from Trainz Forge, I went to download it like I always do, but......................the instant it completed downloading, the .cdp turned into an htm file, and the location changed from where I had it in an external drive to the main downloads folder that had been present since Windows 8 at least, if not 10. I didn't even do anything to get that result, it just..................did it on its own.

Never had this happen before, but now that it has, I'm beginning to wonder if anyone else has had the same issue, and if there's any way to put this right.

(Also, if I put this in the wrong thread, just let me know, and I'll put it elsewhere.)

I am guessing that this was a file download using a third party app and not through Content Manager?

A more detailed description of the downloading process might be the key to unlocking this mystery.

Hmm, perhaps. What I do know is that the .cdp keeps doing it no matter how many times I tried. Though Idk if Trainz Forge supports direct through the Content Manager. Sites like that I usually have to use a browser like Microsoft Edge to download it.

Like I said though, it's never happened to me before, so I don't really know what to make of it. I purchased the CP H1 Hudson pack from Trainz Forge's shop page. Once it had been completed, I proceeded to download it from the order.........uh................you know, when you complete the order some sites put a link to it where you can download it instantly. Well, the process took a rough 2 hours or better. (makes sense since it is 1GB worth of stuff). But as soon as the download finished, I literally saw nothing, and instead I got some .htm file in the downloads folder with a bunch of numbers and letters on it.

4YWDUDb1Ghabnwqg1qWJ3X.htm is what I wound up with. Dunno if that helps.

Content Manager only works on the DLS, not on third party web sites.

Is it possible that you ran out of space on the target drive?

When using a web browser downloaded files are normally placed into your Downloads folder.

I would send a message to Trainz Forge asking them for advice.

Yeah, I figured it would.

When using a web browser, it's basically placed where I want it since I set it like that. However, by default it would be the Downloads folder, which is what I'm trying next.

I'll see if I can message Trainz Forge in the meantime. Thanks.

I think I just figured it out. My Bitdefender keeps thinking it's an infected webpage.
Dump it. The windows built in stuff works fine, third party tend to overreact. I seem to recall one quarantining a windows system file once after an update. A couple of million PCs got scrambled and had to have windows reinstalled before they caught it after four hours. Fortunately it hit an Asian time zone first before it hit the US or Europe.

Dump it? So you're basically saying, get rid of it, use Windows Defender?
Based on more than twenty years of being involved with security at the corporate level yes dump it. The majority of malware these days is based on looking at what Microsoft has patched in their latest update. Often the vulnerability patched in win 11 is there in WIN 10 or even TANE so you write malware that exploits the vulnerability in early versions. The Microsoft products these days are a far cry from the past and really are quite good.

The big problem is false positives with anti virus software as you've found out by experience.

Right click on the download and select "Save link as". If it shows as html then it is really just a link to the cdo file at a different location.

It's best to keep bitdefender anyone who says you should use windows defender exclusively tend to be malware developers who want easy access to your computer. It's best not to trust them.
Just going back through the past posts by the above user does reveal a disturbing pattern - see https://forums.auran.com/search/229464/?c[users]=MRLK&o=date

Until I am proven wrong it is probably best to ignore this poster.

My opinion.

clam1952 is a very different user.
Apart from that I do not see how Malware could be included in a .cdp file uploaded to the DLS. All DLS uploads are checked for "illicit" content and while you can put web links in a HTLM asset those links will only work if they point to posts in these forums or to the Trainz Wiki.

Technically malware needs to be an executable file or something that can be executed. ie a bit of HTML that is executed by a web browser or something in a .pdf document since Adobe reader executes bit of a .pdf file and I don't think Adobe has learnt to spell security yet.

A .cdp file is a data file that is loaded into Trainz and to the best of my knowledge it does not execute anything in a .cdp file and in over twenty years of Trainz and a professional interest in computer security I've never seen any sign of Trainz executing the contents of a .cdp file to allow malware on the machine. I'm getting old if I've been here that long.

From experience you cannot even add a .pdf file into a .cdp file.
