hi ,
long time ago that i was here .
I have used trainz from the beginning till version 2006, and made some content for it .
The last years i have tried Railworks , and now i am making content for it .
I switched to RW because of the graphics.
But i want something with better physics , better AI , better signal logic ,
better and more interactivity ( i remember Trainz has more interactivity ).
I know also that scenic items ( stations , buildings,.. ) can be made as good looking as in RW , but is this the case with the content for the supplied routes ?

You need a version higher than Trainz CLassics 1 or 2 if you want to use the DLS (Download Station)

You also may want TS12 as it is not as demanding as TS2010

If you post your computer specs, someone will be able to guide you to the best Trainz Version for you

thanks
computer specs are not a problem .
I am thinking on buying Trainz 12, but what i like to know , are the assets in the supplied routes up to the modern graphics standards ?

Not in all cases, in fact some still use the legacy content from the original Trainz. You can, however find very nice scenery items for 12 with all the bells and whistles; (LOD, Bump Mapping, Seasonal textures, etc...)

I think the suggestion to get both TS12 and TS10 is a good one. The reason is that you will be unable to use much of the legacy content in TS12 because it lacks a compatibility mode. TS10 has this so you will be able to pick from everything that is available on the DLS, increasing the fun factor for a relatively small additional outlay. Personally, I will be buying TS12 but it is pretty low on my list of priorities right now so I have to wait. Just letting you know I will be taking my own advice.:)

I've seen a lot of words about legacy content requiring compatability mode, and I'm not exactly sure what this means? Does it mean only that legacy routes will not look as good as intended, because of a few of the alpha tree assets or is there more to it than just that?

As an experiment, I did a surveyor "asset replacement" on a legacy route -- just the incompatable alpha trees. The entire operation only took me about an hour. Now the route looks fine in native mode.

Took me a while to get use to TS12, even dropped it at one point out of frustration. But now I have all of my old content imported and the errors fixed it's superb. It runs much smoother than TS2010 even on older hardware.

Don't be as I was, hooked on compatibility mode, it's not necessary in TS12, most of the older content either works out of the box or is easily fixed. The only thing I have been unable to get working is the Razorback and I'm assured that this will eventually be supported. Go for TS12, you won't regret it.
