Do away with "Friend Requests" on this forum

Please? I don't do friend requests and don't know anyone who does. We're all friends here anyway, right?

Totally agree. I refuse (politely) all "friend" requests. Unfortunately, I suspect that it may be built into the Forum vBulletin software and may not be removable.

For some people collecting "friends" can become a competition, like who has the most "followers" on other well known social media sites.

Well, some people do like that feature. But, they could try to make it something you personally want disabled for your account. Just takes a little programming of the interface.

My question is...why does it matter? You guys seem okay with just ignoring them, so why does that automatically mean we should do away with them for everyone? That doesn't make much sense...

A good question and I suppose that in the end it does not really matter. I just feel uncomfortable when I get the odd request - I am not on Facebook or Twitter so I am not used to having any followers. Apart from their Forum profile and a record of their past posts here I have no idea who the requester is or why they would want me (an old grumpy guy) for a friend.

What benefit do they produce?

That is a mystery - apart from those who have a need to gather the most "friends", I do not know.

Perhaps simply ignoring the requests may be the best solution and let those who want/need the feature use it.

Not having "friend" requests also removes a potential tool for some paedophile looking to "groom" younger members.

Reckon that's a serious stretch Vern... Actual social media sites are far more likely, and there's nothing stopping anyone PMing anyone as it stands anyway

I too have always refused friend requests, politely, by saying that I look upon any Trainz user as a friend.

Well...this got dark fast...geez Vern, i bet that if one o' those guys'd be anywhere, it probably wouldn't be on a train-simulation forum...

You would be surprised... Back in the day when Barney and I were running the joint Crotrainz forum it was something we had to keep a close eye on. There's a lot of people out there on the dark net who will pose as anyone to manipulate a younger person (whether that be via friend requests, PM's or "post your age" threads) and is something responsible moderators and administrators need to be aware of. The train sim hobby covers a broad spectrum of ages and Trainz in particular seems to appeal to the younger element. Hopefully it would never happen here but safeguarding users should be the No.1 priority (IMHO).

Some of these posts are just funny!!!

But serious, what's the big deal ...? Someone sent me a friend request, and I click yes, save, and life goes on ... :)

 what for you lot are mad, It feels like you judge the users before you got to know and understand them, some could have special needs :mop: up your act as friend requests could help someone who needs support.

This is maybe a joke to you:hehe: but its not funny. Someone will be :D happy to give support requiried to any user.

Even Skype can do some of that too:Y: .

It does not matter witch way you look at it:eek:.

Everybody is point scoring :'( and harming every user in the process.

I don't see anyone here treating this as a joke, nor do I see any "point scoring" and who is harmed if anyone decides not to accept forum friend requests?

I think you are being far too melodramatic.

The original poster stated a simple opinion - he does not do "friend" requests and would like to see the option removed from the forums. That may not be possible as it may be built into the web software but I agreed with him about not doing "friend" requests and I gave some of my reasons. What I did not say, but will now add, is if I agree to one request I would feel obliged to agree to all. One request I received quite a while ago later turned out to be from a character who was getting involved in many very petty and childish fights in these forums and I would not want to be considered a "special friend" of his. So I politely decline all requests.

Are you saying that only people have have accepted others as "special forum friends" are able to offer help? If you look through these forums you will see many of the names that have posted in this thread, including my own and davesnow (the original poster), giving help and advice to anyone and everyone without requiring them to sign up as forum friends.

As ray posted in this thread

I look upon any Trainz user as a friend

Ok I am just Trainz user that needs bit support. nothing more, but there is not many users about from UK at this time, I am special needs, Every time I come to this forum Since I started I get told off most of the time.:)

My advice to you is take it slow. It's best sometimes just to leave somethings alone. We just like to talk about things and sometimes we get flustered when someone comes in and tells us to do stuff or tell us wats best. It's normal.
