DL Packs from US sites

Trainz drove me crazy
It seems to be getting standard practice for sites like RRmods, USLW and other American sites to have rolling stock and locos only available in packs. These are often more than are needed and are usually a fairly big download. What are we supposed to delete any we don't want? OK for those that must have nearly everything available, but not for those that only want certain railroads. I sure don't need multiple SD-40's in CSX colours or whatever one is enough. Downloading packs is to get 1 or 2 items is a waste of time download allowance. I don't see the point of this practice at all or why these items can't be put on the DLS or available individually. I appreciate the work that has gone into these free downloads, but don't like being able to download only what I would like. Just something for whoever runs these sites to think about.

I don't know where your getting your info from but most sites like RRMod's and JointedRail and USLW just have them in one's or two's,And since they took the time and effort to create them maybe you should be a bit more grateful and just enjoy them whilst they are still being made for free.A lot of those free downloads are made because alot of people either buy there payware or support that site by making donations or donating their time and effort into making content just for YOU.
Cheers Mick.:D

If the worst comes to the worst, you can always go onto Content Manager Plus and delete the rolling stock you don't want. I have to do that sometimes.

I understand Falcon's displeasure at being forced to download items that are un-wanted. Just the other day I was looking at an engine on some site, and I really liked the color of the corona from the headlight, but to my amazement, they did not offer it seperately! In fact, you should have seen what they expected me to download just to get that corona; engine files, bogies, a hornsound, a cab view....jeez; I could go on and on!:(

I suppose those that have a slower connection could wish for smaller downloads, I understand that. As a courtesy; I could see some content makers splitting up packs if they so choose, but it does seem a trivial point to complain about, when someone is essentially handing you a gift! (What? I have to carry that to my car? Why couldn't you have brought it to my house?)

In most cases, there is one mesh with several skins, so the extra file size is minimal. If the packs were separated, those people who want them all would be forced to download the same mesh multiple times. Packaging is the authors choice, not the free recipient's.

Nice attempt at cheap humour and heavy handed sarcasm there Euphod.:hehe:
While it's the creator's choice how they bundle their creations, I would like also to be able to choose. Putting these items on the DLS might be a good idea? I don't call 4 hoppers @ 26mb, or 2 locos @ 27mb small downloads. Downloading and then deleting unwanted items seems wasteful of time and download quota. I guess I just don't belong to the group who feel they have to have every piece of freeware available in every roadname and variation!
:hehe:

Falcon500,
I can understand your point of view if you are on dial up and have a limit of 500 - 1,000 meg's per month. If you are, maybe you might need to look at broadband with a 2gig, 5gig or 10gig limit per month. (In NZ it's only about $20 - $25 per month extra to have a 10 gig broadband plan)...

Personally I'm really grateful to get this incredible free content, regardless of it's file size/s and how it's packed... (What's that old saying? "Never look a gift horse in the mouth").
Happy Trainzing...
Cheers, Mac... :)

Odd - I assumed the bad attempt at humor was yours Falcon. After getting bagged for the same silly idea elsewhere when you come back pushing the same sad barrow here I assumed you couldn't possibly be serious. If you want to waste bandwidth pack all dependencies in one-off packs. If you want to waste time, search for dependencies not included in one-off downloads. Reasonable sized packs are a perfect solution to both problems. Three, four, five models, one set of dependencies all included.

Get over it mate,

Andy

I don't understand your approach here.
You're saying you don't like packs?
I love them! I downloaded the CSX GP40's by Nikos1 on USLW and that is the best thing since the new F7's!
Like Andy said,
Get over it...except let me make it more American for you,
Get over it dude!

I really don't understand the complaint here. A creator can spend hundreds of hours creating something for the community to download for free and you complain about a little extra time to download or delete a few unwanted items. I'll never complain about how a creator wants to package his content. They do it for us, provide it for free and what they really deserve is lots of praise and appreciation for sharing their time and expertise with us.

If you really want me to be spiteful I could always make my content, post screenshots then tell everyone they will never be available for download anywhere ever. After all. I'm under no obligation to anyone to put the content I create up for download or for that matter keep them available. I made them available out of the kindness of my heart but that kindness will only go so far.

Sorry but I like the way they come in packs. You could aways disable what you don't need then when the time comes and you want them all you have to do is inable them again. Just my {NZ} 2cents worth.

C'mon, the guy made his opinion known, he used all the right smilies and seemed to post in good humor. He may not have the popular opinion of downloading in packs, but he wasn't rude about it.

I propose there should be an icon of a heart for each freeware download that all creators should use. If you use the full heart; that means your content is available in packs AND individual files. If you use the "half heart" that means only part of the pack is available as an individual file, and, if you use a 3/4 heart, that means you have left a dependency out of the pack on purpose. A 1/4 heart icon indicates that while the dependency is available, it is on some obscure Transylvanian website, and infected with the Conficter worm.:D

I understand that you want certain things, but you purchase a locomotive pack, the engines are cheaper in a pack than separately. A pack is $5.00 and each locomotive is worth $2.50. Well if you buy one separately, it is usually $3.00 or more. So you're getting a good deal with the locomotive packs.
