First I visited this site: http://www.virtualrailroader.com/DHR-DEM.html

Then I went to this site: http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem.htm

Last I started Google Earth, got my coordinates and then went to this site: ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version1/United_States_1arcsec/1arcsec

Oh yes, I also wanted to know what exactly DEM meant. So I went here after searching Google for the key word DEM: http://fortypaws.blogspot.com/2007/01/skool-day.html

I found some information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_elevation_model

What exactly are you trying to achieve? If you want to build a prototypical route I would think that the method illustrated for the Darjeeling project seems kind of overly complicated. There are much simpler ways. Even if you want to stick with freeware tools and as long as you go for a US route.
