Content Backup

I want to add my custom trainz content for 2004/2006/TC to my automated backup utility but I'm not sure where the data is stored.

To save space, I only want to backup my custom content, not the dls content.

I checked "C:\program files\auran\TC\World\Custom", but there is nothing in there

The content is stored under the:

"C:\program files\auran\TC\Local" folder. (I think - I'm at work so I don't have access to my Trainz PC.)

He is correct, all downloaded content for 2006 and TC is stored in the Local Folder.

Backup custom content

Hi gasolene,

There is a way to backup your custom content, but it is a bit involved.

Open CMP, click on the My Content tab to list only your content then select all in the list, right click anywhere on the list and select Open for edit. That should put all your content in the edit folder, then backup the edit folder.

Hope this helps,

I would strongly recommend that you back up the DLS content also. TRAINZ can have a nasty habit of deleting itself or just it's downloads. This has happened to me twice now, and it is a pain in the *!! to have to download everything from the DLS again even if you do have a first class ticket. Much easier if you have it all on a few CDs.

Thanks!

I assume to restore any content, I simply copy the content back to the local folder.

can i also copy content from 2006 to TC using this method?

Hi, I have some bad news for you, if you are going down the route of messing with the local folder in 06 and TC you will need to delete the asset.tdx file and the contents of the cache folder to stand a chance of recovering the content properly.
From 06 the content is stored a database like thing so it needs to be forced to rebuild and re-look for the content again. If you don't do much custom content I would suggest you create an archive from within cmp of the assets that you want to backup and then just backup that 1 file.
As for the transfering from 06 > TC you would be better off using an archive file from cmp in 06 then open it using the CMP from TC.

Hope this helps.

Backups

Hi gasolene,

I hope you also realise that a copy and a backup are totaly different beasties. If you copy your content to another disk or CD or DVD then you can copy it back then delete the assets tdx file But if you do a backup then the backup file has to be restored rather than copied. I only brought this up because in your previous posts you mention both "backup" and "copy"

Cheers,

My automated backup tool simply makes a straight file copy of the `local` folder on a network USB drive. restoring a backup is a manual process.

Should i ever have to restore the data, I simply copy the files back to the `local` folder and delete the assets.tdx file?
