Class 40 soundset obsolete!

briefencounter

When I learned that TS 12/ Railway Simulator 12 had been gifted with Doppler sound calculations, I was sold on a product that had not previously offered me more than I already have in TS 2009 and TS 2010. Eagerly, I installed the software and created a quick, simple session, featuring my favourite SOUNDING locomotive. What a disappointment I got! It seems that the sound set ("Whistler'") for the BR Class 40 is now obsolete. In TS 2009 and 2010, the Class 40 sounds fabulous but, in Railway Simulator 12, it sounds like a noisy toy train with whooping cough! As an excercise in self-help, I saved the "Whistler" soundset from TS 2010 to CDP and overwrote the one in RS 12, but it made no difference. This applies whether or not I disable the 3D sound option in Surveyor. So, it seems that Railway Simulator 12 treats sound files differently from previous versions of trains. (I'm also having trouble with the Class 45 soundset.) If I want to hear the real Class 40 sounds, I've got to go back to my old versions of Trainz. Mr. Auran and Mr. N3V, why do you do this to me? Each new version of trainz I buy, I gain something I want but I lose something I wanted to keep. In this case it really is a bit naughty because the BR Class 40 is an original Auran creation. Is there a solution or am I stuck with it? Thank you for all comments.

Have you checked the DLS for new sounds?

There has been an asset upgrade program in place, and perhaps someone has remade the engine sound for this asset.

The problem may lie with the older sound being done as a mono sound and TS12, having the 3D effects and Doppler effect added may require an updated format.

Class 40 soundset

Thank you for your reply, John. I did find an alternative sound file on the Download Station and have installed it, after disabling the existing "Whistler'" engine sounds. I can't really say whether it's better, worse, or just the same. I just know that the old "Whistler" sounds are so much better in TS 2009 and TS 2010 than they are in TS 12. The range of audible frequencies coming from (I think) the superchargers is much greater and more varying in the old software than it is in TS 12, in which there seem to be three set levels over the range of increasing/decreasing throttle settings. That said, I like the Doppler effect and the stereo sounds in general. Thanks for taking the time to reply, John.

Kind regards,
Frank. :)
