Check out this 3D-rendering - new method - someday in Trainz?

This is pretty cool how the objects light up scenes and cast shadows. Maybe this technology could be used in Trainz someday. There is quite a bit of prep work for the models to interact with the scene, so this would somehow have to be taken care of through in backend of the game engine.

An interesting demo - but one obvious issue at the moment is that this only works for scenes with static backgrounds and light sources. To produce a scene with a train moving against a changing background (and foreground) with moving light sources, or even the window view from inside the train, would take a "train load" of processing power. The video gave a very vague indication of the time involved in fully preparing each scene and no information at all on the rendering time for the inserted artificial object(s).

Although I am fascinated by the ethical and legal implications that this technology creates for the images it can create. "Members of the jury, the photograph clearly shows that the defendant's car was parked outside the victims house at the time of the crime".

Peter,

You posted exactly what I was thinking too. There's a lot of render time not mentioned, and the prep-time is quite extensive, which is something our simulator probably can't handle because of the real-time outdoor environment with the dynamic lighting and its rare fixed-point.

Very true on the ethics side, but I wonder how much has been thought of on this. People can do this today with video post work too. All they need is a decent video editor and they can create anything.

The difference this technology brings to the process is that it claims to automatically take care of the three factors that experts currently use to spot a faked digital image - Shadows, Lighting and Reflections.
