Capability to edit config from CM stopped working

Also happens in Build 116912, Win 11. Does not open in CM, but using Build 116678 CM will open in Explorer and Win 11. I use Asset-X so the open in Explorer option is not a problem.

I've been using Edit Pad Lite (https://www.editpadlite.com/) for quite some years. In T:ANE, there is on rare occasions a disconnect, but it goes away after closing and restarting Trainz.

Have you tried restarting the PC when this happens?

What if you open the asset in Explorer, right-click on config.sys and select "open with," then select your choice of editor and make sure "Always Use this App" is selected?

:B~)

I'm using WIN10 Pro, TRS19 Build 116678 and this feature always works for me. I, however, do not use notepad. I use Visual Studio Code to edit TXT files. It works every time (unless TRS19 fails to make the content editable). I personally hate how wimpy notepad is.

To make VSCODE work though, I needed to make sure that VSCODE was configured as the default editor for files ending in ".txt". (using OPEN WITH option and making it *default*)

Note: All my TRS19 content is on drive D in an unprotected folder.

Thanks for all the tips. I've tried them all. The problem remains. Every one of my Trainz versions that have the "edit the config file" as a context menu item fail opening the config file with ANY editor the system is told is the default. ALL other programs use the editor as they should, including all my programming suites.

It would appear to be a Windows issue, given your findings. You can repair your Windows installation using a procedure Patrick Marshall described in The Seattle Times 10/9/2021:

First, open a Command Prompt by clicking on the Start button in the lower left corner, scrolling down the list of programs to the Windows System Folder. Next, click on the folder to open it and then right-click on Command Prompt, select More and then Run as Administrator.

Before running the scan with the System File Checker you'll want to use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool, which will gather the files that are needed to replace corrupt files. To do this, at the Command Prompt type the following: DISM.exe/Online/CleanupImage/RestoreHelath/Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows/LimitAccess and then hit Enter. [I believe there should be a space before /LimitAccess, it's been a while since I did this..rhk]

When DISM finishes and the prompt returns, type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

Windows will report to you any corrupt files it may have found. Now, all there is to do is cross your fingers and reboot.

I have used this procedure once with success on a different issue. After you've rebooted, you may have to re-establish the link to your text editor as previously described -- and maybe not.

Best wishes,
:B~)

I tend to think the opposite--that it isn't a Windows issue other than some sort of miscommunication between the Trainz executable and the system. I've run both the System File Checker and DISM to no change. It isn't much of a problem to open anything in Explorer and double-click the config file, but it is a PITA.

Yeah.

I've run out of ideas but if I come across anything, I'll let you know. If you come up with a solution please let us know.
