Capability to edit config from CM stopped working

Prior to build 117009, I was able to edit the config file for any content. Now, when I use the context menu to do so, it fails. Nothing happens other than a brief whirl of the blue "wait" sign, then -- nothing. Did this get broken with the new update?

Bill

Are you using it to bring up Notepad, as it does on my computer? I have found this very iffy for some reason. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I am not sure if it isn't something to do with the call made to Notepad. If it doesn't come up, then I open in Explorer and use Notepad++ to edit. It has better features anyway.

Yes. The menu item used to bring up Notepad, as it has for every previous version with CM. However, I can see now something is happening behind CM for a fraction of a second, then nothing else happens. Viewing the item in Explorer is what I have to do now, and this is a pain as it involves quite a few more mouse clicks than I like. I use Notepad++ to peek inside stuff like CDPs and such to see what text is readable in them. I agree it is far better than simple Notepad.

This has happened to me as well. Sometimes it works, or it works fine for a gazillion edits then it doesn't. The only solution then is to use the open in Explorer and then open the config.txt file. What's quite interesting is the config.txt file is highlighted when opening the asset up for edit using this method as if Content Manager knows this is what you planned to do.

Has it ever start back up again on its own, John?

I suspect this might be some sort of update Windows10 has foisted on my computer. Maybe I'll have to go through the permissions, and default programs (I hate the word 'apps") to get it working again.

Just tried every version of Trainz I have installed. NONE of them will bring up Notepad when I use the context menu. A window opens for less than a second, then closes. The same type of window that errors are reported in. But it is subliminal and I can't get the mouse pointer on the tiny black down-arrow fast enough to keep the window on the screen before it closes. I can catch the first word, which I think is "Can't," then it disappears. There is nothing in the Event Viewer to indicate an aborted Notepad trying to start, so it probably isn't a 'system thing.'

Yes,

After using the Explorer method, the old open config.txt file method worked fine as if the API reset itself. It's a Trainz bug and not your Windows 10 updating.

I hate that "apps" thing also. It sounds lazy.

Ah, so. This is the kind of bug that needs to be fixed, not something like a new and gloriously colorized compass.

I tried opening a 543Mb library file to "edit the config.txt file" and had enough time to capture the window that kept flashing closed. All the window says is "Opened for edit" at the top and "kuid blahblahblah opened for edit." The content is, in fact, opened in the Editing directory, yet he config.txt file isn't presented in Notepad. So, I'd say there is definitely a disconnect between the command I give and the opening of Notepad. I'm not going to mess with this any further. I hate it when I have to spend time trying to fix or actually fixing stuff in the game as opposed to playing it. I would have to imagine that perhaps 30% of my playing time is actually spent fixing stuff that's broken. Time for my NCISs to begin.

I tried in both 114800 and 117009 selected several objects and Edit Config File Text opens in Notepad without any issue.
For what it's worth , I'm using Win10 Pro, version 21H1, build 19043.1586

I was just recently updated to Windows 10 Pro 21H2. Build 19044.1586. I'm pretty sure this is the update that caused this whole mess. I wish I could tie down the exact date the 'open config in Notepad' stopped working, but I can't.

Bill

Sorry Bill, but this is definitely not a Trainz bug, but it shouldn't be hard to fix.

1. Select an item in CM
2. R-click "Open in Explorer"
3. Navigate to the Explorer window
(Now Windows is controlling things)
4. Select the config file in the open folder
5. R-click and click on Edit
Does the file open?
If not, you probably need to reset your registry settings. (Google "reset notepad in Win 10" for instructions)

I also went into my Registry and deleted the settings for Notepad. Still can't get CM to open the config file for me in Notepad.

Bill

Once open in explorer, editing config.txt with notepad appears to work just fine as a default for me. But again, right-clicking in CM and selecting Open - Edit Config.txt has become hit or miss. Whatever call Trainz is trying to make to Notepad from CM appears to be no longer a definite thing.

This is an example of the command line we run. Fill in the path to a config file (ie, ofe in exporer, grab the folder name, etc etc) and try executing this in Windows "Run"

file:///C:/<folder path>/config.txt

e.g.

"file:///C:/p4_src/trainz/candidate/trs21_q3/UserData/editing/kuid2 63015 26506 1 1-Skyscraper Constru/config.txt"

If that works fine, then maybe a permissions issue of some kind? So try running as admin I guess.

None of these commands work:

C:\Users\Bill>"file:///H:\TS2019\build fr2gp0m21\editing\kuid2 52519 37015 1 1 Story Scaffold/config.txt"
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

C:\Users\Bill>"file:///H:\TS2019\build fr2gp0m21\editing\kuid2 52519 37015 1 1 Story Scaffold\config.txt"
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

C:\Users\Bill>"file:///H:/TS2019/build fr2gp0m21/editing/kuid2 52519 37015 1 1 Story Scaffold/config.txt"
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

C:\Users\Bill>file:///H:/TS2019/"build fr2gp0m21"/editing/"kuid2 52519 37015 1 1 Story Scaffold"/config.txt
'file:' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

EDIT: Forget these. I entered them wrong.

This command line works (brings up Notepad with the config file in it):

file:///H:/TS2019/build fr2gp0m21/editing/kuid2 52519 37015 1 1 Story Scaffold/config.txt

However, I cannot get it to work in CM using the context menu.

Which Windows Edition and version (e.g. Win 10 Home 21H2)
Try running TRS22.exe as administrator.

I am not running TRS22. I am still using TS2019 (build 117009). I run it as an Administrator (My account is also an administrator in itself). For build, etc. please see post #11, Tony.
