Build layout for me?

The saga continues

Well, Richard hasn't responded either here or to my Private Message. Lost interest, Rick?

The original bare-bones track laying (see Post #20 above) took about 45 minutes.

Yesterday, with some spare time on my hands, I spent about another four hours, modifying the track work somewhat and adding the basic structures.

It's certainly not the way Richard envisaged it. Richard's flicker link refers to a small rail town surrounded by California Sierra Pines.

Those who have run my other routes will, by now, be well aware of my fetish for the grey, grimy, run down, slowly decaying "smoke stack USA" atmospherics. And for switching layouts. Hence my rendering is a factory specialising in earth moving equipment - front end loaders, trucks and the like. Inputs will obviously include steel coil and plates, auto parts, tyres, fuels and lubricants, paints, coal, ... . Outputs will be completed earth moving equipment and spare parts. It should be fun working this very compact yard.

There still remains much work to do. Well, perhaps another four to six hours. It needs all the additional little scenic details, dock rails track, interactive tracks, texturing, ... . When time permits.

In the meantime if anyone out there is interested in how it is progressing, this is the download link:

As always, feedback is welcome.

Philskene, your efforts are appreciated.

Phil,

I have had a look at your interpretation of the OP's request and as always with your routes you have packed a lot of interest into a very small area.

One suggestion I would like to make if you want it to have a true Inglenook siding would be to modify the two sidings and add a third. The sidings in a standard Inglenook puzzle would only hold 5, 3, and 3 cars, so your longest would be about right and you could probably add a third between the two so that you have a standard Inglenook puzzle. The lead to the sidings could be the head shunt for the sidings.

Here is a link to Shunting puzzles which you might find of interest in adding to any new routes and sessions you might have in the pipeline.

I look forward to your completed route and I hope Richard comes back to you, otherwise he is missing out on a good route which is very close to what he wanted.

Taking shape

I spent a couple of hours on the route this afternoon. It's taking shape. It's looking quite good, actually.

If anybody wants to see the progress, download here:

Next - texturing and the correct track types.

" ...Shunting puzzles ... ."

Hmmm - I certainly was not aware of that. So it's supposed to be a puzzle?

The way it now stands it certainly aint. Well, actually it could be, but considerably more extensive than the classic Inglenook. Digging freight cars out of some of the spurs on this version can require some thought about the best sequence.

Should I think of a different name to avoid confusion?

Phil

Phil - I have downloaded and installed you latest version of Inglenook, its looking really good.

It should be quite easy to add the full Inglenook sidings by straightening the long track at junction 864, and adding an additional siding just after that junction along the short track. There is still plenty of room for three cars without fouling the point lever. In the original plan from the OP the third long (5 car) siding was actually part of the loop parallel to the main line going through the station.

For an extra puzzle you could incorporate the Timesaver puzzle in the additional industrial area you have added to the west of the carriage sidings. I think you have more than enough room without moving any buildings, I will certainly be trying to add it myself at some point. This would be nice for those of us who like these shunting puzzles but not essential.

Great work as always with your "grey, grimy, run down, slowly decaying "smoke stack USA" atmospherics" which I always enjoy running.

Finished, at last

I managed to get a few more hours into this and it has actually turned out quite well. Dirt and grime - yes, very.

For anybody wanting something to do over the weekend, the "Release Candidate" can be downloaded here:

https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=47BF7057B10D1B30!133&authkey=!AKAmhSK771nLMe8&ithint=file,.cdp

The cdp file includes the route and a test session.

In the session you are the driver of a SP SD45 used to work the yard.

An ATSF locomotive leaves the Fiddle Yard, draws into the arrival track in front of the station, uncouples from the consist, moves forwards and then reverses back into the locomotive holding spur.

You couple the SP45 onto the consist. The hoppers dump at the coal pit, the tankcar contains paints. The unloaded flat cars will accept earth moving equipment.

When finished, spot the freight cars in the departure track, the one adjacent to the arrival track, with the lead car just before the signal. When your SP 45 returns to the track where it was originally parked it will trigger the ATSF AI locomotive to couple to the consist and return to the Fiddle Yard.

You can use the 4-key view to fly around watching the AI. In the Map View all the industries have the prefix "IND". It should be obvious what goes where. If not, ask here.

Unless there are any show stoppers I'll upload the route next week.

Phil

Phil - excellent route and a good session as an introduction to the route. All we need now is a passenger train coming and going to get in the way of the shunting movements. Oh, and an umbrella (lol).

Thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated.

Passenger trains. Yes, an excellent suggestion. I'll see if I can work that in.

I was thinking about three consists arriving with freight cars. The departure of one returning to the Fiddle Yard would trigger the arrival of the next. It will give the player lots to do.

Just grabbed this little gem today but need to get more off the DLS for it i only re-downloaded the Inglenook original the other day for a look see lol so i can't wait too see what you've done with it.
Cheers Mick.

Hi Phil,

I downloaded the route and test session from the link in post 26. I just got around to trying it out today. This is what the AI train looks like at the start.

Regards,
Jordan

Hi Mick --

" ... i can't wait too see what you've done with it."

Well, your wait is over - you can now see even if it's not quite ready for downloading (best watched full screen and in HD):

Phil

Hi Jordan --

Wow. No !~!

Make sure you get the correct route to go with the session. I've progressively updated the route and the track layout has changed. If you try to run an earlier session with an older route the track required by the rolling stock might not be there. Hence your result.

Go into Content Manager. Remove all Inglenook routes and sessions. Then re-install the route/session zip file.

Good day peeps I would like to know the same thing about having someone to build a layout. Me and my pops play all the time and want a map we both can run at the same time like a multiplayer map I like doing yard work and he loves to haul butt down the rail lol. Payment would not be a issue. We would like to someone make a route running from rocky mount nc to Kinston nc.I can post a overlay of the route

I get the feeling that the main thing you want is a decent sized route on which you can play together with your dad.
I would suggest to search the DLS for existing multiplayer sessions; note that a session makes something multiplayer or not, not the route.

Route building is a lot of work. Even very small routes (like the one this topic was about), will take many days (if you want some quality).
Maybe building a route together with your dad might be a nice next thing to do; one of you building specific content (structures), the other placing the tracks and doing the landscape. Give it some thought!

If yer pappy is over there in the easy chair on his own PC ... you can iPortal a train from your PC on the davenport, to his PC, if you both have the same assets downloaded

I understand what your saying but like any thing time to show my pops how to work it I would be pulling my hair out lol. What is the name of the program you can use for overlays

New Inglenook and Timesaver route

I have uploaded my version of the route linked to by the OP and it should be available on the dls soon (Inglenook and Timesaver Shunt Puzzles <KUID:351473:100371>). The Inglenook Sidings are as in his picture although they are probably a bit longer than is usual for this puzzle since Trainz requires a certain distance between consists and points to be able to operate the point.

Next to the carriage sidings I have added a Timesaver Shunt puzzle as well as another yard to the south which is a larger version of the Timesaver puzzle.

The rules for operating these puzzles and more about similar puzzles can be found here:

http://www.wymann.info/ShuntingPuzzles/sw-inglenook.html

Around the sidings I have created an industrial landscape similar to those of Philskene's routes though perhaps lacking some of the atmosphere that he creates.

The route was built in TS12 build 61388 with S&C DLC and I have tried to ensure everything is on the dls but because of the DLC I might have missed something. Please let me know here or in a separate thread if you have anything missing.
