I'm still trying to figure out why replacing these powerful steam engines with these so called 'diesel locomotives' they don't have as much respect as the steam engines,you just can't look at a diesel the same way you look at a steam engine[that has been dominating the rails for decades and that is why they should be running instead of environment polluting diesels,I can understand the boiler problems but to bring diesels on to a railroad that ran steam did not solve their problem but made it worse!

Diesel locomotives cost less to maintain, they are easier to run in multiple, they are easier to operate, there's no danger of boiler explosion, they can go farther without refueling, they're easier to find parts for, they're more popular with crews, and they pollute less.

I got to step back in here. Steam creates less Air Pollution than any Internal Combustion Engine (Car, Diesel Eletric, etc,etc,etc). What you see comming out the stack is nearly all water vapor, just a small precentage of it is the fuel it burns. Its been tested and our local engine, SP 4-6-0 2248, creates less polutant than a SUV. You cant tell me a Gp-7 or SD-40 or SD-90 creates less than a SUV.

Did you measure CO2 or sulfur? A steam locomotive, unless it's burning extremely low-sulfur anthracite coal, is going to produce a lot of sulfur emissions. Sulfur is a worse pollutant than CO2, so overall the locomotive has a higher environmental impact than a diesel locomotive.

Granted, overall pollution from any locomotive is almost negligible when the load hauled is taken into account...

Its a mix of Marketing, Costs, and maintince that put an end to the Steam Engine.

This is basicly true for anywhere. In N. America, GE and EMD (Along with the former Steam Engine builders at first) were making diesel Electics and what better to use to sell them than good salesmen. Also, parts were eaiser to get. I belive what realy spelled the end of steam was the MU. You could stick about 6 more engines for the same amount of crew as 1 steam engine. Money has always been the way of the railroads.

SP 2248 is an Oil Burner, as it has been for most of its life. I honestly dont know the full details of it. But I do know that, while some areas of pollutant was higher than others, it was deemed that for environment hurting pollutants ((AIrBorn)Combined, not just one or the other) That the exhaust on the engine while pulling our standard 6 car train (Its kinda steep in areas) compared to an SUV going highway speed, was less than the SUV.

Of course it always Helps with who is firing the Steam Engine.



What happened to my topic? I am kinda liking this discusion, but does no one else care about the 2-10-4s?
