Brand New User who Cannot Get Train to Go

I just bought Trainz "Ultimate Collection." I cannot find a version number, but it says "copyright 2008."

I installed Trainz on my computer, started it up in "driver" mode. I assembled a consist and it is sitting on the track. Everything works fine, but now I don't know what to do. It is idling on the track. How do I make the train go?

Is there a listing of keystrokes somewhere? I cannot figure out how to operate the throttle, brakes, or anything else. In the "readme" documentation, it only lists new keystrokes.

First off you need to register your game on the website. You will get more responses that way.
when you started the game did you choose DCC or Cab view in which to play?

Hi and welcome to Trainz. First you should register your version of Trainz which is a pretty old one. Click on the serial number at the top of this page and enter the number that came with the game. it is a series of 4 character groups which must be typed exactly. Careful with 1 I AND 5 s and 0 o I,m not sure but I think UC is unsupported now so I would suggest you purchase a later edition at some point. I,m currently playing Trainz 2010 which is pretty good. Anyway I,ve never played that version so bear with me. You can drive the train yourself or the compter (AI) will do it for you. Most versions of Trainz have tutorials but as I said I don,t know about yours. In UC isn,t there a large round dial located at the top, right of your screen? When you start playing you may have been given 2 options as to how to control the trains One is called DCC which is the easiest to use and works exactly the same as a model railway transformer. Right to go forward. Left to go reverse. The other way is more challenging but more realistic. This involves using keystrokes to control the train. You can also operate the controls of the train you are driving in the cab but that is a pain so forget about that. Steam locomotives are a lot harder to drive than diesel. This is how I drive a diesel. Q = release brakes. W = open throttle 1 notch each time you press it. X= decrease throttle 1 notch. S = shut off throttle. Brakes are morecomplicated. A applies brakes to the Lap position (slightly applied) followd by Z then A again to fully apply the brakes. H is the Horn. These are the main ones.

Thank you for your help. My version of Trainz came with no documentation, no instructions, and no tutorials. I was able to get the trains going using the DCC method as you suggested, and am figuring things out.

I know many of you are much more serious about this than I am. I am a model railroader, and regular Amtrak rider. I happened to see my version of Trainz in OfficeMax for $10, so I figured I would give it a try. I will play around with it for a while. If I enjoy it, I may buy a newer, more complicated version. Hopefully, it will have instructions.

Using DCC mode is easy

Cab mode Keyboard Commands are:

L (Light)
B (Bell)
H (Horn)
S (Stop)
F (Forward)
R (Reverse)
Q (Release)
W (Throttle Increase)
X (Throttle Decrease)
A (Application Brake)
Z (Lap) I never used this
C (Dynamic Brake)

When I Cab drive I use this method: LBHSFQW ... WWWWWWW ... X ... XXXXXXXSA

I don't have UTC, but you should look in Explorer for files with TXT or PDF extensions - or a search for "manual" in the UTC folder may turn up something. My TS2010 didn't have a printed manual, but looking in;

C:\Auran\TS2010\Extras\Documentation

I find a file named;

TS2010EE_Manual_US.pdf

Double click on that and Adobe Reader (or Foxit Reader from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/ for those who are tired of Adobe bloatware) will open a 50 page "virtual" manual that I could print out if I had any ink in my printer. :hehe:

Alternate if you can't find a manual, look for a file named keyboard.txt and print that, for TS2010 it's in my C:\Auran\TS2010\UserData\settings folder.

CascadeRailroad, thank you for all of the keys. Unfortunately, my version keys are very different. By playing around, I figured out that the numeric keypad is where throttle and brakes are. I agree that it is much more enjoyable, and seems more realistic to use throttle and brakes, rather than DCC mode.

I am having a problem understanding how to apply the brakes, but I am about to post that as a new question.
