Blue Comet

Hi Rod

Exactly the same as on a locomotive :) Make sure the 'exterior view' (2 key) camera is focused on the carriage (use the '-/_' and '=/+' keys at the top of the keyboard to move the focus along the train), and then go to the 'interior view' (1 key).

You should then be sitting in the carriage. Use the [/] keys to move around the carriage.

Are you referring to my pictures? If so, it is the Erie mainline from Port Jervis, NY to Suffern, NY on the NY division. It has a long way to go yet.

Thanks Zec,
This should make my 'travels' more interesting.
Cheers

The world has gone to the dogs. Why do you want to get money for this stuff? Selling a locomotive without a shadow and great textures is not a good idea. If you wish to see locomotives definitely worth purchasing, take a look:

Amazing, isn't it? What is more, these beauties are totally free. Shame on you.

Where can you get those?

Please guys stop turning this thread into a Payware vs Freeware argument. Take it elsewhere. You CANNOT compare payware assets with freeware assets and vice versa.

Cant wait to see more pics of the blue comet.

Actually you can, but irredisregardless, we don't want you doing it here!

I think I have some pics of my Blue Comet, I'll be postin' thems!

Ah! My local area...
I have two questions, though...
Are you building the modern day NJT/MNR/NS line or the former mainline which is (unfortunately) a bike trail?
Is the branch to Newburgh going to be included?
Either way, I can't wait! I know it will be amazing!

I've been working on an activity...well truth be known a series of activities for the train set on the PO&N. I picked that route only because it's about the largest, and it's built into TRS2010.

The activities are as follows:

1.) "High Stepping Part 1". Lead the Comet Light version into the yard, stopping at all stations along the way. Sure, this train was built for speed, but you're running the local today. Pick up an extra pair of baggage cars loaded with mail along the way and place them behind the tender. Estimated time to complete: Just under 1 hour. Session ends when the three baggage cars (all loaded with mail) are placed at the RPO track. (I'll designate a certain track for that, as there is no RPO track that I know of on the PO&N) Light to moderate traffic.

2.) "High Stepping, Part 2A" Now that the Comet has come in, and the locomotive pulled off to be turned and refueled, you're tasked with using one of the diesel switchers to pull the train away and sort it into the coach yard. This sounds easy, but you have to turn the observation around, line it up on the station track, and then build the train in the proper order. That, compounded with having to tack on the baggage cars that just arrived. You've got a time limit on this one. Don't make the express late! Light through traffic, estimated time to complete: Around 30 minutes. (That's all the time you actually HAVE to complete it.

3.) "High Stepping, Part 2B" With the train now complete and the diesel off in a siding, it's time for you to take the Blue Comet locomotive (the blue one) and couple it to the train. Do this GENTLY, we don't want to make the chef in the dining car mad now do we? Once the train is cleared to leave, you've got a long sweeping express run, with no less than SIX major stops. You're running against heavy traffic here, and though you're a hotshot, you've still got to let a couple of fast express freights pass. Can you do it and keep to the schedule, getting the passengers to their destinations on time? Estimated time to completion: 2 hours.

As yoda would say....

"A beauty, she is."

:hehe:

Besides, before anyone jumps to conclusions on whether or not the train will apppear in NTSE, I'm not sure.:o

It wont. You have 2006. As has been stated repetitively, the Blue comet is for 2010.

Rob, would it be possible to release just the alpha maps for the loco/cab textures and to say what materials were used (tbumpgloss or tbumpenv)? Quite a few of us are struggling to get the shiney/less shiney effect out of one material...
Scratch that, I've had a look at the materials now and they are m.tbumptex type with an alpha channel in the normal map - a combination that shouldn't mean gloss mapping according to the wiki. I'm still unsure what the alpha channel does in a m.tbumptex material as I was expecting m.tbumpgloss or tbumpenv on the Comet. I suspect the normal maps may be being ignored and what looks like specular highlights are actually baked into the skin.

Interestingly the normal maps are only half the size of the main textures - there are 2 main textures at 2048x2048 and the normal maps are only 1024x1024. In total there are 25 materials used by the loco body alone which we've also been told to avoid...

The poly counts for the body are 70388/42898/24288/12014 (4 LODs).

The former mainline, think 1950s. I don't think the terrain extends to Newburgh.
Ah... Thanks!
The former mainline is now a trail from Harriman (Turners) to Middletown.
The reason I asked about the Newburgh branch is because that is were the Moodna Viaduct was on back in the 50's.
I'm in Orange County so seeing my local line is really cool.

Paul

The WIKI's down right now so I can't verify, but I believe the normal map alpha channel in a tbumptex material controls specular strength.

tbumpgloss uses a reflection map you define, and tbumpenv is the same, except it uses an environment map instead.

My '09 moguls have some gloss effects - I don't know if that's what you are looking for, but if so, the gmax source files are at http://www.carsoncarshops.com/files/virginia.zip.

defiantly going to look into this. I remember watching an old video of the Blue Commet when I was younger. No matter what railroad I set my head on, I still haven't forgotten that.

These coaches look much better than anything else out there. I wish there was a way to reskin 'em into black/dark green/red and reletter them to my own railroad. In 2004 it's easy to reskin something, you go to the item's folder and copy the files to a new folder, edit the art files, edit the config and you're done. These coaches make Bendorsey's look inferior. But, I don't have 2010, so I'll have to do with what 2004 has.
