Australian screenshots

A silly question as I know it has been answered somewhere on the forum before but the search feature cannot find it.

What is the standard Rail Gauge for NSW, QLD, and VIC please.

Another question, is there a standard distance between dual tracks in each state?

Hello Craig,

The standard gauge in all three states is 4 foot 8 and a half inches or whatever that is in millimetres. The space between the two rails of a piece of track is called the 4 foot for this reason.

The standard distance between dual tracks is roughly 6 foot give or take a bit for clearance and wider rolling stock or narrow locations.

The area between the outer most track and the boundary fence is called the cess and this can vary dramatically.

Are those shots in native mode and are you blurring the scene around the loco's slightly?

I'm pretty sure they're in native mode... They look no different in either mode anyway, since the map was designed for native mode :)

The blur is added in photoshop. I'm somewhat trying to give the feel of a bit of depth of field, but those two shots are a little over done (particularly that second one). Just been getting a little annoyed seeing perfectly sharp scenery in the distance in my screenies (in-game doesn't bother me, but in my screenies it does) :hehe:

New South Wales's state track gauge is virtually exclusively 'Stephenson' standard gauge (4' 8.5").

Queensland has a short section of standard gauge running across the border from NSW to Brisbane but the actual Queensland state network is so-called Cape Narrow Gauge (3' 6"), as used also in Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.

Victoria's state network was originally Irish broad gauge (5' 3", shared with South Australia) but a standard gauge line from Albury to Melbourne was constructed in the 1960s.

Additionally, the Melbourne to Adelaide broad gauge route was converted to standard gauge in the mid 1990s, and now the old broad gauge route to Albury is gradually being closed and dismantled in favour of the direct standard gauge line.

Of course there were other private lines in those three states as well which often used their own individual gauges (the old Silverton Tramway from Broken Hill was built to 3'6" for instance), but the above are the main line gauges for those 3 states. :)

As for distance between tracks, I have no idea as to what the common standard was, although it's most likely not as wide as the British 'six-foot'. But that's just a big guess on my part.

I don't know about a standard distance between the tracks. The track that comes up from NSW comes out at Acacia Ridge and is basically a dual guage line all the way in to Roma Street. The dual guage uses one rail as a common rail (shared by both guages ) and the other is two separate rails each spaced to accomodate the respective width. eg I II. There is only one place where this varies and that is platform 2 at Roma Street. There it is a gauntlet gauge, where the QLD guage fits inside of the NSW guage thus -> II II. This is as far as I am aware in Brissy anyway.

Thanks everyone for the help. I had a rough idea on the various State gauges but was never very sure. I noticed on the DLS yesterday that someone had made a lot of "toolz" to help with the distance between dual tracks or even more so while I have one at the moment, these new toolz seem to possibly be better.

Again this started out as an upgrade of the old model and ended up a total rebuild from the bogeys up. Everything is new and has been beta tested in 2010. However, it is very usable in 2004 and upwards. The beta testers are happy with it and you can find it over at Victrainz Content Release announcement forum You need to Register to view the message and link

Pete. I don't appreciate you using my textures and modifying them for your models then uploading them without atleast crediting me. You didn't credit me with the End Platforms (which I didn't mind) but you haven't asked about the CPHs.

Good morning Daniel,

I apologise, after thinking about how I went about the project and looking back at the main texture. I now realise that it originally commenced life as the texture you created for the end platform cars, before I heavily modified it for the CPH. I did not recognise it as the same in the end, if I had I would have contacted you.

Given that I created the textures before I started the model, over 18 months ago, I truly forgot and no offence or plagiarism intended. It was a genuine mistake and oversight I am happy to now withdraw the model.
