Steam trains

How do I manage the coal and water boxes when running the steam trains? I thought they would just be a cosmetic addition but I did the final Australian tutorial (steam) run and ran out of power around a mile from the finish! Also....can anyone explain what is the difference between cutoff and regulator?

The Steam Tutorial should show you how to manage coal and water. I have found managing the water for steam pressure to be a bit tricky. Adding too much cold water at once can cool you down, so try to keep a little coming in at a time. Same with the coal, if you let it get too low and then shovel a lot in it will take time to catch, and you can actually lose heat in the short term.

Regulator is amount of steam
Cutoff is the length of the stroke of the piston
